The National Bank of Belgium’s Economics and Research Department is launching a call for candidates among economists with a Ph.d. in Economic Science for a temporary microeconomic research post (maximum 2 years).
The National Bank of Belgium (NBB) offers its economists the best analysis and research tools available and access to a wide-ranging collection of statistical data, including microeconomic information.
The successful candidate (F/M) will carry out high-level microeconomic studies, working individually as well as being involved in internal collaborative research projects, research networks, ESCB expert groups. He will be required to present the findings of their research at seminars or scientific conferences and to ensure their publication in renowned academic reviews.
The research subjects will cover price trends and determinants of price-setting at microeconomic level. To help with this work, he will have access to the various microeconomic databases available at the NBB, particularly those for the consumer price index (CPI) and the producer price index (PPI), at firm and product level.
A diverse range of questions are likely to be studied::
-analysis of price trends, notably in terms of duration, frequency and the distribution of price changes
-price rigidity, the cyclical nature of price changes, including comparisons with the situation before the economic and financial crisis
-the role of market characteristics, the degree and nature of the competition, features of shops and types de products on price movements
-the role of labour costs, cost of intermediate goods and the mark-up in price-setting
-the social consequences of price movements, combining information on the characteristics of products consumed and data from the household budget survey
-the comparison of price-setting methods for goods and services.
Applicants must have a Ph.d. in economics, extensive knowledge of econometrics, and be able to analyse large volumes of microeconomic data. Experience in the field of microeconomics, especially as regards firm behaviour, is desirable. The successful candidate will show a keen interest in the above research themes. Scientific publications in international economic reviews are as asset.
The research post will be for two years maximum (two one-year contracts). Part-time or short-term contracts are also possible. The salary will be commensurate with relevant experience.
The eligible applicants will be requested to present one of their articles at a seminar.
