The Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary’s University invites applications for a Sobey Post-Doctoral Fellow in Emerging Disciplines position in the Department of Finance, Information Systems and Management Science. The Sobey Postdoctoral Fellowship in Emerging Disciplines was established to nurture, promote, and advance highly innovative and creative multidisciplinary research in the school. The Postdoctoral Fellowship is part of the broader initiative to grow the research and scholarship impact of the Sobey School and is funded from the historic gift received by the school from the Sobey Family, Sobey Foundation and Sobeys Inc. in 2019. The position is for two years beginning from January 1, 2021. Continuation after the first year will be contingent upon satisfactory performance in the first year. The Sobey Post-Doctoral Fellow will join a Sobey alumni cohort – a community comprised of all beneficiaries of Sobey gifts to the Sobey School of Business.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in computer science, economics, finance, information systems, or other related fields and must have excellent programming skills related to machine learning. The successful candidate is expected to show considerable promise for excellence in multidisciplinary research and be a team player. Knowledge of applications of machine learning in financial research will be an asset. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of a team of finance faculty members in the school and is expected to undertake original research and publish in high-quality journals.

RESEARCH FOCUS: The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be working on innovative applications of machine leanings in areas of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Supply Chain Sustainability (SCS), and Economic Disruptions. In particular, the successful candidate will utilize machine learning and advanced data analytics tools to develop and test models of CSR and SCS around exogenous disruptions such as the COVID-19 global pandemic.

BENEFITS: The fellowship provides salary stipend of $65,000/year plus conference travel funding of $10,000/year. The successful candidate will be eligible for Saint Mary’s University benefits package. While there are no teaching requirements attached to this position, the Postdoctoral Fellow may have the opportunity to teach one course with an additional stipend as applicable. The Sobey School of Business provides a rich and vibrant research environment with access to a wide array of research databases hosted by the Patrick Power Library.
