Associate or Senior Editor, Quantitative Social Sciences (Nature Climate Change)

London, Berlin or New York

Closing date: November 12th 2020

Nature Climate Change is a multi-disciplinary journal publishing high-quality research related to all aspects of climate change. The journal’s scope includes both the natural and social sciences and economics.

We now have an opening to join our team as an Associate or Senior Editor. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to help shape the social science content of the journal.

Our professional editors make the final decision on what we publish. You will play an important role in determining the representation of policy and socio-economic dimensions of climate change, and more broadly the social sciences and humanities, in the journal.

You will work closely with the other editors on the on-going development of Nature Climate Change and all aspects of the editorial process, including:

  • Manuscript selection
  • Commissioning and editing of Comments, Perspectives, Reviews and News & Views
  • Writing for the journal
  • Liaising with the academic community through institutional visits and international conferences, as well as engaging with stakeholders

This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills, the ability to absorb new areas of research, and a keen interest in the practice and communication of research are prerequisites using your excellent interpersonal skills.

The position will ideally be based in our London, Berlin or New York office, but exceptions can be considered for strong candidates. Nature Climate Change is part of a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that also includes Nature, Nature Energy, Nature Sustainability and Nature Human Behaviour.

The candidate must have:

  • A PhD, and preferably postdoctoral experience, with a strong research record in social or behavioural science, ideally with a focus on environmental topics
  • Strong candidates with other social science expertise will be considered
  • Be familiar with mathematical modelling and econometric approaches
  • Demonstrably broad interest in the social, economic and policy basis of environmental and climate issues across geographical and temporal scales.
  • Editorial experience would be beneficial, but is not required as full training will be given

The salary and benefits will be competitive, reflecting the critical importance and responsibilities of this position and in line with other employees across the business.

To Apply: Applicants must provide:

  • A CV and a brief cover letter explaining their interest in the post as well as salary expectations; (including their class of degree and a brief account of their research and other relevant experience).
  • A Research Highlight (200 words or less) on a recent paper from the climate change literature
  • An outline for a special issue of Nature Climate Change, featuring 3-4 commissioned review or opinion pieces with suggested authors.
