The Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki is an independent Swedish-language social science unit at the university with a Nordic and international profile. The School responds to the new challenges of the Nordic welfare model in a stimulating and diverse research and teaching environment, with around 450 students and a staff of around 60 people, the largest Swedish-speaking unit of the university.

TENURE TRACK OR FULL PROFESSOR IN ECONOMICS

The discipline of economics at the faculty of social sciences offers an exciting research environment and competitive terms and conditions. The new position is part of the rapid expansion of Helsinki GSE. HGSE is an academic initiative bringing together three Finnish universities – Aalto University, Hanken School of Economics, and University of Helsinki. By joining the forces of three universities, the mission of HGSE is to produce outstanding research with maximum academic and social impact – both nationally and internationally, to attract and educate the next generation of world-class economists and to offer excellent training across disciplinary borders.

Half of the selected candidate’s teaching will take place at the Faculty of Social Sciences (Helsinki GSE) and another half at the Swedish School of Social Science as introductory level teaching of economics in the Swedish language open for all students at the university. The selected candidate will also participate in the supervision of economics theses in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral Programmes of the Faculty.

The Economics discipline provides methodologically oriented, state-of-the-art training in economics. All fields will be considered for this position. However, we especially encourage applicants with strong background in econometric and/or theoretical methods to apply.

QUALIFICATIONS

An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor within the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant/associate professorships shall demonstrate their capability and motivation as regards an academic career through publications and other means.

An appointee to a full professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, along with the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching as well as to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that they represent. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary to serve as academic leaders.

Because the language of instruction for the position is Swedish, successful completion of the duties of the position requires excellent proficiency in Swedish. The recommended level of Swedish proficiency corresponds to level C2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills and ability to teach in English.

• leading of scientific research
• international research experience
• activity in the academic community
• teaching experience, supervision of theses and dissertations and other pedagogical merits
• leadership and interaction skills
• vision of how the applicant intends to develop the field and focus his or her research

• interview.

SALARY

Annual gross salary for a full professor varies between 70,000 and 96,000 euros, and for an assistant/associate professor between 58,000 and 69,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
