Title: Tenure Track Professor in Agricultural Analytics and Production

  • Employer: Purdue University (Department of Agricultural Economics)
  • Location: United States
  • Position Type: Assistant or Associate Professor
  • Deadline: Dec 30, 2017

  • Job Description:

Principal Duties: Purdue University’s department of agricultural economics is seeking an applied economist for an academic year appointment at the assistant/associate professor level to develop and/or lead a nationally recognized research, engagement or teaching program in any area of agricultural economics that is directed towards farm-level decision making. Specific areas of interest that have substantial overlap with the department’s areas of expertise include economic analysis of precision agricultural production technology, agricultural production sustainability, and risk. We are particularly interested in candidates who also bring strong quantitative analysis skills and experience working with layered data sets related to agricultural production. The candidate may teach undergraduate and/or graduate level courses.

This faculty position complements a variety of both new and existing positions within the department as well as within the College of Agriculture. Within the department, this position is complementary to numerous tenure-track faculty searches upcoming in the next one to two years. Within the college, there is an initiative to hire six faculty over the next two years as part of a cluster hire to leverage existing strengths in digital agriculture. Digital agriculture has the potential to create a continuum from the sensing of data, to the handling and analysis of the data, ending with action on this information (then with feedback through a cycle) within the food system. These hires, expected in Agricultural & Biological Engineering, Agricultural Economics, and Agronomy, will complement digital agriculture strengths in these programs, as well as those in Botany & Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Horticulture. Additionally, there will be many opportunities to collaborate across colleges within the university.

Qualifications: The candidate must have a Ph.D. in agricultural economics or economics, with expertise in microeconomic theory and quantitative methods applied to problems related to farm-level decision-making. This position requires a strong ability to communicate orally and in writing when working in the classroom or in public forums. The Ph.D is required by the start of the appointment. Salary will be commensurate with training and experience.

The College: The Department is an integral part of the College of Agriculture, one of the world’s leading colleges of agricultural, food, life, and natural resource sciences and ranked eighth globally in the 2016 QS World University Rankings. The College is deeply committed to the three land-grant missions (teaching, research, and extension), to international activities and perspectives that span all missions, and to excellence in all we do. The College has 11 academic departments and includes 325 faculty, 2782 undergraduate students, and 690 graduate students.
