POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of Economics at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is pleased to announce a 2-year Postdoctoral Fellowship. The successful candidates will work closely with Professor Jeffrey Clemens (UCSD), Stan Veuger (American Enterprise Institute) and Michael Strain (American Enterprise Institute) to develop and advance projects that seek to inform the design of public policy and institutions, as well as to enhance the transparency of the evidence base on which policy choices are made.

The position offers the opportunity to participate in and further develop established projects on research areas that are poised for substantial growth in coming years. In particular, the COVID-19 pandemic and long-run forces have created a number of structural challenges to the performance of state and local governments. The position comes with the expectation of producing analysis for peer-reviewed academic papers as well as engaging actively in new project development. The ideal candidate will be someone who values rigor, relevance, and impact in economic analysis.

The position is open to a candidate who will have earned a PhD in Economics or Public Policy by July 1, 2024, with a focus on public/labor/health economics. Strong applied econometrics skills are expected, as are excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ideal candidate will also have a deep interest in U.S. public policy, with an emphasis on the economics of fiscal federalism.

The position will be based at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and will be for 2 years. The target start date for the position is July 1, 2024, with some flexibility on the exact start date. The successful candidate will be based at UCSD and be a fully integrated member of the UCSD economics community. We expect that successful performance in this role can lead to a variety of longer-term career options including faculty positions, or joining policy think tanks, non-profits, or U.S. government agencies.

Please apply through EJM, and feel free to reach out to Jeff Clemens

(j1clemens@ucsd.edu) if you have any questions.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, but it is highly recommended that you apply before January 30, 2023, for full consideration.
