During Fall 2021 we will post videos of discussions of various aspects of the job market for PhDs in Economics. In these videos, Joel Watson, CEO of Econ Job Market Inc. and Professor of Economics at the University of California, San Diego, interviews experts and job-market participants about the job market for Ph.D. economists.

January 10, 2023: Session on the fly-out phase, for candidates

In this session, three economists who were on the job market in recent years discuss the fly-out phase and offer a little advice and encouragement to current candidates. Topics include seminar presentations and planning for one-on-one meetings.

November 12, 2021: Overview of jobs and the recruitment process (Federal Reserve, Justice Department)

This video gives job market candidates an overview of positions for Ph.D. economists and the recruitment process at a U.S. Federal Reserve bank and two government agencies, the Department of Justice and the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Topics include job descriptions, work expectations, and the recruitment process.

November 1, 2021: Discussion with recent job-market candidates

October 7, 2021: Overview of jobs and the recruitment process (colleges, universities, corporate sector)

This session gives job market candidates an overview of positions for PhD economists in colleges, universities, and the corporate sector. We look at how job descriptions and expectations differ across these sectors. We also discuss the recruitment process and how it differs across those sectors. (There will be a separate session on jobs in the public sector later in this series.)

September 6, 2021: Placement of PhD graduates (Mapinator project)

Joel Watson interviews Amedeus Dsouza and James Yu, former and current students at the University of British Columbia, about their Mapinator project to collect data and geographically display placement outcomes in the job market for PhD economists.
