We are looking for an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Risk Management. This position is located in the Insurance Science discipline within the Business Studies Unit of the Faculty of Management and Business.

We see risk management as a broad, interdisciplinary and strategically significant organizational practice, not merely a compliance or control function. In conditions of deep uncertainty, firms must continuously renew their competitive advantage, making risk management a core strategic capability. Business growth and value creation are increasingly unfolding in networks and ecosystems, demanding new competencies in collaborative risk governance and risk-sharing models. The professorship approaches risk management in this expansive sense — as a central enabler of firm-level value creation and growth — and is embedded within the Insurance and Risk Management study track. We value broad competence in risk management rather than a narrowly defined specialization. The selected candidate is expected to develop a research and teaching profile that connects strategic risk management theory with contemporary business challenges, including digitalisation, AI-driven decision-making and climate change adaptation. The research and teaching activities of the selected candidate should address relevant aspects of this focal area.

Relevant domains include (but are not limited to):

  • Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and Strategic Risk Management (SRM) — including risk identification, assessment and governance across organisational levels, and risk management as part of corporate planning, value creation and growth.
  • Risk in the age of AI and digitalisation — modern risk modelling methods, responsible use of AI in uncertainty quantification, and risk management challenges in data-driven and algorithmically mediated environments.
  • Resilience and behavioural dimensions — uncertainty management, resilience-building capabilities, risk leadership and culture, and behavioural perspectives on preventive risk management.
  • Networked and collaborative risk governance — risk management in data-driven, digitalised, volatile, networked and collaborative operating environments, including risk-sharing models.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background — or clear potential — in enterprise and strategic risk management, to advance traditional risk management by addressing uncertainty, complexity, and value creation. In addition to enterprise risk management and strategic risk management, suitable disciplinary backgrounds include business fields such as strategic management or marketing; engineering fields such as industrial engineering or knowledge management; or interdisciplinary fields such as futures studies.

The Business Studies Unit at Tampere University is a vibrant and collegial community of approximately 100 academic staff, educating around 350 business graduates annually across management and organisation, accounting, marketing, economics, insurance and risk management, and business and tax law. Our mission is to educate broad-minded business professionals with competencies valued in the evolving society, pursuing scholarship that combines academic excellence with societal relevance. We are ambitious academics who combine disciplinary depth with a genuine commitment to collaborative development, actively building our research and teaching profile toward the 2030s.

Insurance and Risk Management Research Group focuses on topics relevant to the insurance industry as well as risk management themes across industries. The research themes are often cross-disciplinary and multi-method, spanning the perspectives of individuals, organisations, and society. Key research themes related to risk management include decision-making under uncertainty and behavioural and strategic approaches to understanding risk.
