Nuffield Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

Grade: 07 RS, salary: from £48,235 to £52,539 per annum

The Department of Economics, in partnership with Nuffield College, is offering full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellowships for candidates who have recently completed, or are close to completing, a doctorate in a relevant field.

Fellowships are full-time and tenable for a fixed term of three years from September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Shorter appointments will be considered in exceptional circumstances.

The fellowships offer early career researchers the opportunity to develop their research portfolio within one of the world’s leading Economics departments and so strengthen their future position in the academic job market. These positions are designed for suitably qualified candidates with a clear preference for not going on the junior academic job market in 2025/26. We welcome applications from candidates conducting research in any field of Economics.

The postholders will perform the following duties to the satisfaction of the Head of Department:

(i) to engage in research of a quality commensurate with publication in leading international economics journals;

(ii) to develop and manage their own independent research agenda;

(iii) to present their research at international conferences and research workshops;

(iv) to play a full role in the intellectual life of the Department including working collaboratively with academic colleagues in areas of shared research interest, and taking part in department seminars and workshops;

(v) to provide up to 60 units of graduate or undergraduate teaching per annum as requested by the Head of Department. The Department operates a points system to manage workloads. For example, 60 units is equivalent to 20 contact hours of graduate lecturing, or 15 contact hours of graduate class-teaching.

(vi) to co-operate in the administration of teaching and research;

(vii) to examine as required by the appropriate committee.

The postholders will be expected to undertake further duties for Nuffield College including:

(i) to participate in the intellectual life of the College by attending, and where appropriate by organising, seminars, workshops, conferences, and other academic events.

(ii) to act as a mentor for graduate students, where appropriate, and to represent the College’s body of postdoctoral research fellows on one of the College’s committees, and to take on College officerships, where appropriate.

Candidates will have recently completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in a relevant subject. They will have publications in peer-reviewed journals commensurate with their career level. They will have the ability to present research findings effectively, to innovate and work effectively with colleagues and to play a part in developing the Department’s and the College’s research programme, as well as being able to teach high-achieving graduate students. Additionally, they will possess excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and be willing to contribute more generally to the intellectual life of the Department and the College.

The Opportunity

This role provides support in conducting independent and collaborative research, contributing to publications, and presenting findings at seminars and conferences. The position includes participating in professional and academic meetings, offering guidance to postgraduate students, and managing minor administrative and teaching-related tasks.

As the successful candidate, you will be able to work with a team of leading researchers: Professor Jiti Gao, Professor Oliver Linton, Dr Tim Neal, Professor Bin Peng, Professor Peter Phillips, Professor Shuping Shi and Dr Wei Wei on an Australian Research Council funded project on Unified Model Building and Estimation in Dynamic Econometrics. You will demonstrate strong analytical capabilities and a proven track record in producing high-quality research publications in econometrics or related fields. Within the I-Tésé Institute, the "Energy Systems and Society" team investigates issues related to energy sufficiency, socio-technical challenges, the role of innovation processes, and their integration into society. This work is carried out within the framework of projects, with both institutional and academic partners. The institute now wishes to develop work involving behavioural/experimental economics.

We are seeking a research associate to help drive forward this new disciplinary approach within the Institute. Working with the head of the division and a researcher in energy economics, you will help narrow research topics, conduct a behavioral experiment (either in the lab or online), and develop academic partnerships.

The Academic Coordinator role is essential to the academic delivery of the Programs. This position will be responsible for:

  • Instruction and training of students in applied finance and investment research;
  • Curriculum execution and coordination of learning outcomes;

Salary and conditions

As Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross NOK 700.000 – NOK 775.000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and NOK 400 for funds for organizational development initiatives.

Short-term Fellowships at the Center "Finance & Inequality“

We invite established scholars in empirical and theoretical macroeconomics to spend a period of time in residence at the University of Bonn – Center for Advanced Studies “Finance & Inequality” (www.casfi.uni-bonn.de). The fellow is expected to interact with faculty and researchers, present work at our workshops, actively participate in workshops and conferences, and conduct economic research in the fields finance and / or inequality.

Fellowships have a duration of 3 to 6 months. Recipients receive a monthly fellowship of €3,000 to €5,000, depending on experience, to cover the additional living costs for a stay in Bonn. Moreover, we also reimburse reasonable travel expenses incurred for the trip to Bonn and the trip home at the end of the scholarship.

A work space will be provided.

In the newly founded Center for Advanced Studies “Finance & Inequality” (CASFI), led by Carsten Burhop (Economic history) and Christian Bayer (Economics), a number of early career and established researchers will come together to explore the broadly defined topic finance and inequality that also leaves them scope for their individual research ideas. In particular, researchers are looking at the multiple relationships between the macroeconomy, the financial sector, and inequality both from a historical and a contemporary empirical and theoretical perspective.

The ideal candidate would work on applied questions/issues using strong quantitative frameworks. The candidate must have a world-class research program and an ambitious research agenda. The holder of the Chair will implement a creative and independent research program that is based on external research funding and will be actively involved with graduate student training and education. The Chair will be appointed to the Department of Economics, and will be expected to teach and supervise graduate students in this unit.

New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.

Rank and salary:

Terms: tenure-track academic appointment in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The salary range for a full professor starts at $131,803 and for an associate professor starts at $109,776 (scale of the collective agreement between APUO and the University of Ottawa as of May 1, 2025). Salaries are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Aix-Marseille School of Economics (AMSE) is seeking to recruit a Professor in Economics under the Junior Chair Programme (Chaire de Professeur Junior). This programme includes substantial research funding and a 50% reduction in teaching load for the first three years (64 hours per year instead of 128). The working languages at AMSE are English and French. The ability to teach in French is required from the fourth academic year. The starting gross monthly salary is €4,061. The salary will evolve according to the procedures and scale for university professors (currently, the maximum gross monthly salary is approximately €6,500).
