The height of the bar for each season is the number of applicants registered during that season who expect to receive a doctoral degree in the calendar year of the second half of the season. Each season starts on July 1 and ends the following June 30. (For seasons before 2018–19, our data are incomplete.) Note that the current season is still in progress.
For each applicant, the country is the one in which the institution granting their doctoral degree is located. All countries for which there are 10 or more applicants in a given season are shown; the remaining countries are aggregated in the "Other" category.
Average # of applicants per year is for all complete seasons since 2018–19. Population figures are for 2020 or 2021.
