Job Posting: Elizabeth Scurlock University Professor in Human Values: Endowed Chair of Ethics in Artificial Intelligence

Rank/Title Associate/Full Professor

Position No. 50966

Southern Methodist University (SMU) seeks a visionary scholar to lead our groundbreaking initiative in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Ethics beginning August 1, 2025. Over the past several years, SMU has been actively developing a big-data ecosystem, supported by next-generation research computing technology, to engage the disciplines across campus from physics to art, engineering to history, and business to education, in the pursuit of leading-edge research with impact.

The Elizabeth Scurlock University Professor in Human Values: Endowed Chair of Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (Scurlock Chair), one of SMU’s two endowed university-level professorships, reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and represents our commitment to bringing an ethical and humanistic analysis to bear on the future of AI. We see this chair as an opportunity to expand our impact across both the artificial intelligence and ethics domains, and to bring to campus a world-renowned scholar who will contribute to, and expand upon, the robust work that is already taking place on campus in ways that benefit faculty, staff, students and the broader community.

Position Overview

We are at a pivotal moment in human history, where artificial intelligence is reshaping the fabric of society. Our university seeks a thought leader who will bridge the technological frontier with human values, ethics, and societal needs. The successful candidate will help to shape vital conversations across academic, political, and policy discourses that guide societal understanding of how AI can augment and enhance human capability while preserving the essence of human creativity, decision-making, and social connection.

The role of the Scurlock chair is to be a leading advocate for ethics in the national and international community. Certainly, we recognize the need for human-centered influence in the development of AI to ensure that technology serves human needs and values. From a philosophical vantage, the concerns range from AI’s social and cultural impact to the development of values literacy in AI programming or the protection of human rights. In governance, the issues may include maintaining transparency in decision making, data and privacy concerns, responsible innovation, and equity and access concerns. In applied ethics, the practical implementation of AI might include governance standards, policy oversight and ethical guidelines for AI deployment. We welcome applications from any recognized area of study.

Qualifications

SMU is seeking an active researcher in ethics applied to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in ethics, a closely related field, or an equivalent terminal degree. The position will be at the rank of full professor. Candidates at the associate rank with the potential to earn full professor will also be considered. We are open to any AI research specialization, as we recognize that expertise in AI may come from a wide scope of perspectives. Additionally, the candidates should have:

• Demonstrated excellence in bridging technological innovation with human-centered approaches

• Track record of interdisciplinary collaboration spanning technical and humanistic domains

• Understanding of AI applications to collaborate on fundable grant opportunities

• Proven ability to engage with questions of ethics, equity, and social impact in technological advancement

• Strong commitment to mentoring the next generation of thoughtful technology leaders

• An interest in and passion for partnering with the region’s corporations, foundations, and municipal governments on matters affecting the DFW metroplex

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess

• Vision for preserving human agency in an increasingly automated world

• Commitment to equity and inclusion in technological advancement

• Capability and proven history of contributing to current discourse as a public intellectual who brings issues in ethics and AI into contact with concerns of everyday life

• Passion for nurturing human creativity and critical thinking alongside AI literacy

• Desire to teach AI-related ethics courses in the graduate/undergraduate curriculum

• Experience in curriculum development that integrates AI literacy with critical thinking and creativity

• Ability to translate complex technological concepts to diverse audiences

Our Commitment

• We offer a vibrant intellectual environment where innovation meets reflection, and where technological advancement is guided by human values. Our university is committed to creating a future where AI serves as a tool for human flourishing.

• SMU values cross-disciplinary collaboration. Whether working with our innovative Pegasus Park project, The O’Donnell Data Science and Research Computing Institute, The Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility, the Dedman College Interdisciplinary Institute, or the numerous initiatives of our eight degree-granting schools, opportunities for collaboration and impact are substantial.

• This position offers competitive salary and benefits, research support, and the opportunity to shape the future of human-centered AI development.

SMU has a long commitment to ethics. Two university professorships were established in the mid-1980s, the Scurlock Chair and the Maguire Chair in Ethics. In 1995, The Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility was founded as a university-wide initiative for the interdisciplinary exploration of contemporary ethical questions.

Major grant-funded research utilizing AI by SMU faculty and students include:

• SMU is part of a six-institution NSF AI Institute (AI-ENGAGE), which is focused on narrative centered learning environments and has emphasized ethics and AI.

• Researchers in SMU’s Simmons School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) are collaborating with SMU’s Guildhall to build AI into their XPRIZE-winning adult literacy app to create an adaptive learning experience.

• Researchers in SEHD are collaborating with Kings College, U. of North Carolina and University of Zambia to add AI to their virtual reality surgery simulation to provide a real-time feedback experience to trainees.

• Supported by an $18 million DoD contract and NASA grants totaling more than $2 million, Earth Science’s faculty in Dedman College lead a consortium of universities working to integrate AI into the detection and interpretation of subtle seismic and acoustic signals relevant to national defense, and in the interpretation of satellite data.

• SMU physicists, who have played an important role in the discovery of the Higgs particle, are utilizing AI to reduce model dependence of discovery, and are working to put deep learning on a chip for hardware deployment at CERN.

• Researchers in SMU’s Lyle School of Engineering are exploring a range of areas including the integrity of the nation’s infrastructure, traffic management, on-line information credibility, discrimination of external threats from malfunctions in cyber anomalies, and collaborative machine/human problem solving.

• Scholars in communication and business are working with corporate and nonprofit boards to consider their expanding responsibilities as AI begins to impact organizational operations.

• Scholars in the arts are investigating a wide variety of applications including AI-assisted digital art creations, AI-assisted music production and mixing, and motion capture analysis for dance optimization.

• Legal scholars are analyzing areas such as risk management, regulatory compliance, outcome due diligence automation, and automatized contract reviewing and drafting.

About Us

Foundation for Economic Development (FED) is a Delhi-based non-profit organisation that aims to bring about a sustained and broad-based economic growth of over 10% in India.

The evidence clearly shows that economic growth is the best tool to lift people out of poverty and improve the quality of life for everyone. Until 1991, Indias poverty rate remained unchanged at ~50%. Post reforms, poverty reduced from ~50% to ~20% with 35 crore (350 million) fewer people living in abject poverty. Since 2010, sustaining fast growth has been challenging as the easy gains have been realised. It is critical for India to maintain a growth rate of over 10% for long periods of time if we want Indian's quality of life to improve rapidly and sustainably.

FED will identify select sectors of the economy which have the highest potential for generating incremental growth and jobs and then work with policymakers to make it happen. The organisation has Dr Aravind Panagariya, Naushad Forbes, Gurcharan Das, Jerry Rao and Ashish Dhawan on its advisory board who are helping shape the thinking and execution.

Our Work

FED has identified Export Led Labour Intensive Manufacturing and Tourism as the highest opportunity sectors for generating incremental growth through aggressive reforms over the next few years. About the Position

Rethink Priorities’ Animal Welfare Department is a hub and platform that advances and pioneers evidence-based and reason-driven change for animals. The department seeks to hire a Senior Researcher to help fulfill our mission of accelerating the end of factory farming and reducing the suffering of animals living in the wild. The Senior Researcher would play a leading role in each of our core programs:

Research: We accelerate the development of evidence-based findings and insights for those working towards a better future for animals.

Stakeholder engagement: We build meaningful connections to support better-informed decision-making of advocates, charitable organizations, and others improving animal welfare worldwide.

Infrastructure development: We experiment and scale up novel approaches to help the most neglected animals and strengthen the capacity of the animal welfare movement.

  • The types of tasks involved in the role: Within the first year, you are likely to do most of the following at least once:
    • Conduct a literature review to get a better sense of the scale of an issue negatively affecting animals
    • Model the cost-effectiveness analysis on an intervention to reduce animal suffering
    • Identify and interview experts to address questions that cannot be easily answered by consulting academic or grey literature.
    • Deliver an oral presentation on your recent work at a conference, and network with other attendees.
    • Help organize a coordination event to help the animal movement prioritize which issues to tackle next.
  • What sorts of topics you would work on: Check out the executive summaries of our reports on investments into insect farming, institutional meat reduction campaigns, and labeling restrictions for alternative proteins to get a sense of the types of questions you would investigate. Many of our projects are self-generated, based on ideas that we believe deserve more attention, while others are requested directly from mission-aligned philanthropic or advocacy organizations.
  • What makes this a "Senior" role:
    • The level of autonomy: You have the experience to execute projects with minimal oversight. While you have many colleagues you can consult, you will take the initiative to learn how to do tasks you have not done before.
    • The opportunity to provide strategic input: Department leadership will often consult you on decisions of strategic importance, such as which projects to work on.
    • Your demonstrated ability to tailoring outputs to decision-makers: You have conducted research that is aimed at influencing stakeholders other than your peers. As part of that experience, you have elicited the needs of your main audience early on during projects, and have adjusted the presentation to ensure that the key insights are easy for them to find and understand.

The successful candidate will report directly to Senior Research Manager William McAuliffe and collaborate with the entire Animal Welfare department.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Researcher, you will play a key role in designing, conducting, and communicating high-quality research that informs and guides animal welfare leaders, organizations, policymakers, and charitable foundations in developing strategies to improve animal welfare.

In line with this overarching mission, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging with external stakeholders to identify how to create deliverables to their preferred specifications.
  • Building Fermi estimates and forecasts, explicitly incorporating uncertainty.
  • Drafting well-written reports from inception to delivery, with minimal oversight.
  • Ensuring that projects remain on track, and proactively identify mitigation measures when barriers arise.
  • Assessing how sociopolitical and economic developments may pose threats or opportunities for animals

What We Are Looking For

Skills and Competencies

Required

  • An abiding commitment to the mission of Rethink Priorities' Animal Welfare Department
  • Ability and willingness to learn how to use and interpret a wide variety of methods, including quantitative concepts and models.
  • Excellent at explaining the premises and inferences involved in a chain of reasoning
  • The ability to communicate clearly about complex concepts that may be unfamiliar to your target audience.
  • Resourcefulness to identify tractable ways to address open-ended questions
  • A steadfast commitment to truthseeking and principles of research ethics
  • Professionalism in interactions with all colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Comfort with remote work and asynchronous collaboration using technologies like G Suite (we're a remote-first organization with staff in multiple time zones)

Nice to have

  • Proficiency with R or Python
  • Skill in using strategic decision-making tools (e.g., SWOT analysis, PEST analysis, stakeholder mapping, etc.)

Knowledge and Experience

Required

  • 5+ years conducting relevant research
    • Many topics count as "relevant," including (a) animal welfare science, (b) evaluating or informing government policy, (c) consulting to inform decisions in an industry, or (d) regular use of quantitative models.
    • If your research during a master's or PhD program was relevant, it counts towards this requirement.
  • At least one past role where a key responsibility involved liaising with external stakeholders to ensure that your research outputs are tailored to their needs.
  • Comfort with using consequentialist moral frameworks and assessing opportunities in terms of their marginal cost-effectiveness.

Nice to have

  • Experience working in or volunteering for the animal advocacy movement
  • Knowledge about politicians, parties, and policies in a jurisdiction that produces or consumes a large number of animals.
  • Knowledge of methods for assessing sentience and welfare in nonhuman animals.

CSEI is established in the form of a European research centre at CBS’ Department of Economics and delivers expertise and new knowledge as well as education within energy infrastructure in close cooperation with stakeholders from the sector, the European Commission and society at large.

About the Department of Strategy and Innovation at CBS

The Department of Strategy and Innovation’s (SI) research is focused on strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship and international business. The department’s ambition is to host an internationally leading environment for research and teaching within the broad area of strategy. The department’s research is generally cross-disciplinary. Faculty members have backgrounds in management, economics, sociology and economic geography. The theoretical foundation for research in these areas is eclectic, combining strategy, innovation, and/or internationalization theory with insights from economics, sociology, psychology, and economic geography. The department has 45 faculty members (professors, associate professors, tenure track assistant professors), 8 administrative staff, and 30 members of staff who are hired on temporary contracts as research assistants, post docs or PhD students.

The department puts substantial emphasis on the solid application of scientific research method. The department has a pluralistic approach to research methods that includes, for example, formal theoretical models, quantitative empirical methods such as (lab and field) experiments, econometric applications to register data or survey data, as well as qualitative research methods. PhD project proposals should be based on coherent theoretical arguments and contain well-informed methodological considerations. To find out more about the department please go to https://www.cbs.dk/si.

About CBS Maritime

CBS Maritime is a cross-departmental research center at CBS, established in 2013, that focuses on maritime economics, business, and policy. It serves as a hub for maritime research, education, and industry engagement, fostering collaboration between academia and key stakeholders in shipping, ports, and maritime industry.

CBS Maritime conducts research on critical topics such as decarbonization and clean energy, sustainable shipping, maritime digitalization, and supply chain innovation. Its studies aim to inform best practices and policy development for the maritime sector worldwide. Key educational initiatives (e.g., the B.Sc. in International Shipping and Trade, the Executive MBA in Shipping and Logistics, and the higher diploma degree HD Maritime) integrate CBS Maritime’s research into academic study programs.

About the POTENT Doctoral Network

The POTENT project is an EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Training Network focused on the topic of ports as energy transition hubs. This collaborative research project provides a fantastic opportunity for researchers interested in the clean energy transition and the role that ports can play in this transition. It aims to integrate knowledge of engineering (e.g., mechanical and electrical engineering) and social sciences (economics, sociology, and anthropology) in a doctoral training programme across 8 European research institutions and 15 industry actors. The POTENT consortium brings together a multidisciplinary research team from across Europe to train experts in port energy systems and develop key skills to deliver a just and sustainable energy transition. Ports are increasingly recognized as key enablers of the clean energy transition, playing a crucial role in supporting Europe’s shift toward climate neutrality and energy security.

Immediate focus is largely on labour intensive manufacturing as this is an area of highest upside if right reforms can be brought about around critical factors of production like labour, land, utilities, EODB and logistics.

Meet Our Leaders:

Piyush Doshi (Operating Partner)

Rahul Ahluwalia (Founding Director)

Vinay Ramesh (Chief Operating Officer)

Our Approach

FED work streams are divided into three primary areas.

  • Research and Strategy: Deep dive into identified sectors, speak to relevant stakeholders, study practices from other countries and build data-backedthe evidence for change
  • Communication and Outreach: Build salience for opportunity in target sectors and need for reforms through op-eds in relevant channels, social media as well as one on one engagement with key bureaucrats and policymakers.
  • Implementation Support: Work with select state governments in helping implement specific actions to promote the target sectors. The team is currently working closely with the UP Government on its Mission Trillion Dollar'' economy. The team is also working with Telangana and Tamil Nadu governments on their economic growth agenda.
