SFU is an equity employer and strongly encourages applications from all qualified individuals including women, Indigenous Peoples, racialized persons, people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, persons with disabilities, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of the university
The Opportunity
SFU invites applications from world renowned researchers for the prestigious Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) 2026 Competition. The CERC program stands at the centre of a national strategy to foster research excellence in Canada and improve our depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthen Canada's international competitiveness, and help train the next generation of highly skilled people. The program offers an avenue for Canadian institutions to recruit the best global talent and brand Canada as a location of choice for world-leading research. CERCs are one of the largest and most prestigious awards available globally, providing the world’s top researchers and their teams with up to $8 million over eight years to support their research programs and teams.
This program provides an opportunity for international researchers, including Canadian expatriates wishing to relocate to Canada, to lead a prestigious research program at SFU and to contribute to Canada’s excellence in research and innovation. Applicants must be full professors or associate professors expected to be promoted to full professor within one to two years of the nomination. Alternatively, if they come from outside the academic sector, applicants must possess the qualifications necessary to be appointed at these levels. This opportunity is only open to people who do not currently hold an SFU appointment.
The CERC program uses a two staged process where 1) interested applicants submit an application to this CERC position advertisement for an internal review and assessment process and then 2) the successful applicant(s) will prepare the required documents, including a proposed research program, to be nominated by SFU to the CERC program and undergo peer review. The nomination is expected to be submitted in March 2026. SFU will provide substantial support in the preparation and development of the program application including project management, budget planning, proposal development and editing. If successful, CERC awardees will also receive substantial support for their research programs and for administration of the grant.
In addition to the CERC nomination process, successful candidates will be appointed to a faculty position (Associate Professor or Professor) in an appropriate academic department/school/faculty at SFU, to start as early as Spring 2027. Procedures and processes have been established to permit non-Canadian chairholders, and in some cases members of the chair’s team, to work in Canada.
Applicants may also be considered for Canada Research Chairs and endowed chairs at SFU.
RESEARCH ALIGNMENT
SFU welcomes applications from outstanding established researchers in any area of SFU institutional strength, with particular emphasis on the following themes:
1. Equitable Health and Social Care
The processes and structures that shape our health and social care systems need to be increasingly responsive to changing local and global circumstances. We are seeking ways to transform and reimagine health and social care to be more accessible, equitable, and responsive. SFU researchers tackle social inequities and improve health systems by bridging innovative thought, technological advancement, critical policy studies, and social change. Our researchers engage in global health, social policy, migration, and health equity studies, fostering wellbeing through community-driven, inclusive research.

2. Community-Centred Climate Innovation
Climate change represents one of the greatest challenges of our time. While climate change is happening globally, its effects and the resources available to adapt and to mitigate future warming differ between communities. Climate innovation crosses disciplines, touching deep societal, health and justice issues as well as clean energy technologies, climate science, mathematical modelling, and environmentally-friendly solutions to protect crops and maintain healthy ecosystems. SFU ranks #1 in Canada and third in the world for its global impact on sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) and climate action (SDG 13). Our researchers are exploring the intersection of marine biodiversity, climate change impacts, and ecosystem management to inform sustainable food production and sovereignty. SFU is performing research and development to decarbonize energy sources and promote the adoption of zero-emissions energy technologies. By integrating research-based, technological, financial, and policy-informed approaches while prioritizing community knowledge and leadership, SFU is committed to co-creating a sustainable future.
SFU’s approach includes developing innovations at the community and regional level, followed by sharing and scaling those approaches to make impacts globally by engaging with all levels of government, industry and community members.

3. Foundations of Diverse Cultures, Knowledges, and Origins
Fundamental questions about the natural world, human societies, and cultures drive research that reshapes our understanding of the universe and our place within it. SFU researchers explore natural phenomena on multiple scales from the subatomic to the cosmic, from a single gene to a multi-celled organism, and from single entities to complex interacting systems. A fuller picture emerges when we examine the development and progression of our languages, cultures and knowledge systems. This includes examining the role of human creativity and criticality in the production of new knowledge and understanding. Community participation and diverse knowledge systems are central to pushing the boundaries of discovery into new frontiers
Advancing knowledge in these areas requires integrating diverse methodologies, including data-driven modeling, experimental techniques, qualitative analysis and storytelling. With more thorough insights into our complex world, both natural and cultural, we are better equipped to look forward, pushing the boundaries of discovery into new frontiers. Through interdisciplinary inquiry and community engagement, SFU scholars are deepening our understanding of the world.

CHANSE "Enhancing well-being for the future"
The work of the Polish team is funded by National Science Center
Prof. Michal Brzezinski - head of the Polish team within the international consortium, which, in addition to the UW, includes CeMPA (UK), University of Barcelona (Spain), Stockholm University (Sweden) and IAB (Germany). The project leader is Prof. Matteo Richiardi, director of CeMPA (University of Essex, UK)
Well-being is a multi-dimensional concept that spans a variety of life domains and time scales, affected by variable determinants across the life course. As such, it eludes simple analytical frameworks, and calls for an integrated approach. Data limitations, however, significantly constrain empirical analyses. The relationship between subjective and objective measures of well-being is also difficult to analyse in the absence of retrospective information on individual histories and prospective information reflecting expectations for the future, all of which bear upon a broad interpretation of well-being.
Against this background, we propose a step-change in the analysis of well-being by using dynamic microsimulation methods to augment existing data sources. Preliminary analysis of interrelationships between individual well-being and multiple life domains – including work, family, and health – will be of stand-alone interest, in addition to forming the basis for integrating measures of well-being in a state-of-the-art dynamic microsimulation model. The new model will allow us to generate in silico complete life-course trajectories from existing survey data.
We propose to use our innovative microsimulation approach to analyse the distributional dynamics of well-being over the life course for five European countries, reflective of diverse welfare regimes: Germany (conservative), United Kingdom (liberal), Spain (Mediterranean), Poland (post-Communist) and Sweden (Nordic). Analysis will explore how well-being is affected by aggregate and individual crises, distinguishing between personal shocks, and macro-economic events. A key focus of research interest will be the efficacy of policy interventions designed to enhance the resilience of individual and social well-being to considered crises.
Basic responsibilities and obligations:
- Collaboration on microeconometric analysis of the determinants of well-being over the life cycle of individuals
- Collaboration in the analysis of measures of multidimensional well-being and measures of inequality in multidimensional well-being
- Developing the Polish version of the dynamic microsimulation model (model estimation, adding modules related to subjective well-being, etc.).
- Use of the dynamic microsimulation model to estimate changes in welfare over time (in cooperation with teams from other countries)
- Use of the dynamic microsimulation model to analyze the impact of labor market crises on the welfare of individuals
- Preparation of scientific publications based on the obtained research results and presentation of results at scientific conferences
- Participating in administrative and organizational work related to the project (including participation in monthly project meetings)
- Co-organization of the project meeting at the University of Warsaw
- Co-organization of meetings presenting project results to social partners
Start of work: 1 October 2025
Period of employment: 6 months with possibility of extension up to 30 months after positive evaluation
Gross annual salary of PLN 140,000 (the amount includes the employer's costs and the 13th salary)
Other working conditions:
- Budget for computer equipment and travel to conferences
- Possibility of partial remote work
- Work in an international research team (UW, CeMPA, University of Barcelona, Stockholm University, IAB) bringing together leading European centers in microsimulation and wellbeing research
- Conducting research whose results can be published in prominent scientific journals
Conditions for entering the competition:
- Fulfillment of the requirements set forth in Article 113 of the Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws 2024, item 1571, i.e.).
- Doctoral degree in economic sciences obtained in an institution other than University of Warsaw (or completed at least 10 months of continuous and documented postdoctoral training at an institution other than University of Warsaw and in a country other than the country in which the doctoral degree was obtained) and in the year of employment in the project or within 7 years prior to January 1 of the year of employment in the project (the time limit from obtaining a doctoral degree for female applicants for these positions may be extended by 1.5 years for each child born or adopted).
- Knowledge of measures and ways to measure individual and social well-being in economics
- Very good knowledge of microeconometrics
- Proficient programming skills (R, Stata)
- Strong research skills in economics as evidenced by publications in good scientific journals

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The PhD student will develop a research agenda on the political economics of migration drawing implications for the integration of migrants in destination countries. European societies face increasing challenges in integrating diverse cultural values and norms, making immigration a central topic in political debates. Concerns over cultural differences between natives and immigrants influence public opinion and policy, often fueling populist sentiments. While research on migration and integration is extensive, evidence remains mixed on whether immigrants assimilate into host societies or retain their cultural traits. Some studies suggest immigrants influence institutions and norms in their new countries, while others highlight a gradual adoption of local values through economic and social integration. However, the factors shaping cultural assimilation and persistence remain insufficiently quantified. This project seeks to address this gap by examining how both origin and destination countries shape immigrants' cultural preferences. An important focus will be on the labor market of the host country, particularly the role of skills—both in terms of availability and how they are valued by local employers. Despite the growing immigrant workforce in Europe, little is known about how firms perceive migrant skills compared to those of natives. Moreover, skill downgrading is a common challenge for migrants seeking employment. Beyond labor market integration, demographic and fertility-related factors are relevant too, particularly from a gender perspective. Also, different patterns can relate to the experience of voluntary versus forced migration. The analysis may leverage the use of large-scale European datasets, country-level datasets or experimental research based upon own original data.
SUPERVISION & RESEARCH TEAM
The PhD student will be supervised by Simone Moriconi in collaboration with Riccardo Turati (Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona). The student will also benefit from interactions with a a team specialists in the fields of labor economics, industrial relations, management and demography, which are part of the IFLAME Research Center and the “Economics and Financial Flows” axis of the LEM research unit.
