The Bank of Lithuania (BoL) invites applications for positions in its Visiting Researcher Program for the year 2024. The program is coordinated by the Applied Macroeconomic Research Division of the Economics Department. The Division undertakes applied research in macro, fiscal, monetary, labour and international economics with the aim of contributing to the analytical and policy functions of the Economics Department – to conduct and publish high quality research and facilitate decision making at the BoL on monetary and other economic policy issues. The Applied Macroeconomic Research Division is also responsible for building and developing macroeconomic models that are used in forecasting, scenario analysis and policy evaluations.
Structural unit: Applied Macroeconomic Research Division, Economics Department
Program description:
During their stay at the BoL, visiting researchers are expected to conduct economic research either individually or in cooperation with the BoL’s staff. The research projects will be agreed upon in advance, and their results are to be presented in BoL seminars and published as research papers in the BoL’s working paper series. Publication of the papers in refereed academic journals is strongly encouraged.
Visiting researchers will be provided with office space, available data resources and computing facilities. They will receive compensation according to the BoL’s remuneration system. The duration of stay is flexible, determined by the amount of time needed to complete the project, but it typically ranges from 3 to 6 months.
Research priorities of the program:
Proposals in all areas of economics relevant for central banks will be considered, but priority will be given to research projects on topics most aligned with the current and medium-term research priorities of Applied Macroeconomic Research Division. These include but are not limited to:

Although the ideal candidate should have research interests and technical knowledge in line with the projects described below, the Bank is willing to accept candidates whose research proposal could fit more broadly its research agenda.
The purpose of the Programme is dual: selected candidates will closely collaborate with senior staff of the Research Department enabling them to familiarize with the Bank's research activities and with policy work in ESCB institutions, while at the same time they engage staff members with novel research and advanced techniques developed in academia.
Project 1: Implementation of Density Forecasts and Macro-at-Risk Approaches
A quantitative assessment of risks to the economic outlook play an important role in both economic policy and private sector decisions. Lately, policy institutions are stressing the importance of having a structured and econometric-based approach to the treatment of risks of macroeconomic projections.
This project aims at filling this methodological gap by developing a toolkit able to accurately estimate the risks surrounding the Bank’s projections and to account for the considerable volatility and the significant data revisions affecting the Maltese data.
A detailed description of the project describing tasks and requirements can be found here: https://www.centralbankmalta.org/site/About-Us/Careers/2024/Doctorate-internship-Project-1.pdf
Project 2: Develop our understanding of short- and medium-term economic impacts of adverse climate outcomes
The understanding of the physical impacts of climate change are highly relevant to the Bank’s primary mandate to help maintain price stability in the euro area. In the short term, extreme weather events could lead to the destruction of housing and productive capital leading to short-lived disruptions in supply and short-lived inflation spikes. In the medium-to-long run however, climate change can lead to more persistent reductions in output and upward pressures on inflation.
In this light, the CBM is planning to start looking at the empirical links between climate change and macroeconomic outcomes. The approaches utilized are planned to be in line with Kotz (2023) and Cicarelli et al (2023).
A detailed description of the project describing tasks and requirements can be found here: https://www.centralbankmalta.org/site/About-Us/Careers/2024/Doctorate-internship-Project-2.pdf
Research agenda
Apart from these two suggested projects, the Bank’s Economic Research Department is currently conducting research work in the following broad areas:
A. Study of country/bank specific characteristics for monetary policy transmission
B. Inflation nowcasting using webscraped retail price data
C. Sectoral effects of extension of ETS system
D. Impacts of inflation on households – microsimulations using HFCS data
E. Development of multicountry DSGE model with energy/climate features
The Bank will offer IT support. Access to confidential data may be granted, if needed for research purposes.
During the Internship, selected candidates will present the progress of their work in internal seminars. By the end of the Internship selected candidates are required to prepare a research paper to be published in the Bank’s working paper series.
Eligibility
Applicants must have completed all courses and be at an advanced stage of their Ph.D. in economics, econometrics or finance. They must be fluent in English.

Shortlisted candidate will be contacted to schedule an online interview.
The Central Bank of Malta is an inclusive employer, and it encourages applications from candidates irrespective of their gender, gender identity, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability or other characteristics.

Want to quantify real-world cross-price-elasticities? Estimate competitive intensity? Make millions of counterfactual predictions? And use all this to actively drive quantifiable, significant impact? Then come join our team! As Zalando’s algorithmic pricing team, we price 500k products across 20+ countries every day. To do so, we bring together deep-learning-based forecasting methods with rigorous econometric demand modeling and off-policy learning.
Pricing is a key lever to steer Zalando’s €15+bn in GMV, to improve our platform economics, and to better understand our and partners' competitive positioning in the dynamic fashion marketplace. Better pricing has significant economic impact, but through managing our seasonal inventory it also reduces waste and our environmental footprint. Here, you can make a real difference at the intersection of state-of-the-art econometrics and causal machine learning.
In this role, you will be a central thought leader in our understanding of demand systems: how does price affect demand? How do value-anchoring effects around discounts come into play? How can we estimate cross-price substitution in a computationally tractable way? Can we measure the role consumer consideration plays? What about competitors' prices? Can we model forward- and backward-looking consumer behavior? How can these insights inform our pricing algorithms, and what might they tell us about related topics such as assortment, marketing, and product ranking?
You will learn about our pricing systems and utilize our full dataset for high-exposure projects. You will be part of a cross-functional team, responsible for selecting the scientific approaches as well as building the systems for pricing science. Your colleagues will include PhD economists, former professors, and machine learning experts. You can grow your career through hands-on implementation of the latest ideas in the literature, and hard-and-fast A/B-tested evidence of your contributions. You’ll get to work and collaborate alongside senior Zalando economists (including Justin Rao and Greg Crawford). You will have access to Zalando’s comprehensive data sources, computational infrastructure, and software tooling.
Help us build a system that uses off-policy experimentation, automated causal learning, demand modeling, and continuous measurement to increase market efficiency and reduce waste.
WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED
- Help us reach the frontier of demand estimation: coming from our existing and validated own-price elasticities, we want to estimate more complete models of demand that include substitution, consideration, display, and competition.
- We have terabytes worth of observational and experimental data on purchase histories, clickstreams, and product similarity scores, amongst others. You will use these sources as needed, and propose efficient experimentation strategies to generate interventional data where necessary.
- Influence neighboring teams in algorithmic pricing and beyond to allow your breakthroughs in demand estimation to impact Zalando’s pricing and platform algorithms end-to-end.
- As an evangelist of econometric methods, you will collaborate with economists and machine learning experts to build the most data-efficient, impact-oriented pricing solutions possible.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Excellent educational background (PhD, or M.Sc. with relevant professional experience) in economics or marketing, ideally specialized in structural empirical industrial organization or quantitative marketing.
- Strong background in demand estimation. Ideal candidates have experience building and estimating custom models with large-scale, real-world datasets, as well as making the tradeoffs associated with alternative methodological approaches given the available data.
- Experience driving product impact: You are able to maintain a medium-term research roadmap while regularly delivering incremental improvements to our systems. You also speak fluent “business” and can work with senior stakeholders.
- Scientific pragmatism: good judgment for the right level of rigor to deliver results. You know when in-depth modeling pays off, and when pasting aggregated data into a spreadsheet will do the trick.
- The ability to implement your models in Python or R, and to wrangle terabytes of data using SQL and/or spark on large, complex datasets.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every single qualification: some strong candidates may lack parts of the listed qualifications. Research shows that underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work.

About the Business Transformation Program
Private enterprise is one of the world’s primary drivers of wealth, employment, technological advances, and social progress. Effective business leaders and entrepreneurs need an understanding of corporate and market dynamics that drive growth and competition, the strategy and mechanics of business innovation, and managing operational complexity involved with turning a local success into a global enterprise, or taking a new idea from proposal to profitability. The Business Transformation program teaches students the principles and practice of organizational leadership and prepares them for innovation in top global organizations. There are two specializations, Accounting and Finance, as well as three concentrations (Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Growth Strategy and Management, and Operations Management) within the Business Transformation Program.
About the Social Innovation Program
The Social Innovation program equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand the ways people think and act — individually, in groups, and in societies — and the ways that biology and the environment interact to make each of us unique. Social Innovation students learn how to address complex societal issues through a deep understanding of human behavior within broader social, political, and economic contexts, by leveraging the latest communication strategies and media technologies to articulate and influence social change and innovation. The Social Innovation program offers specializations/concentrations in Communication and Media, Psychology, Political and Economic Systems, Societal Transformation, and Behavioral Economics.
About the Sustainability Program
The Sustainability program explores the science behind the impact of human activities on the environment. Students learn to develop sustainable solutions to important global issues by applying new technologies, business strategies, and social policy in a variety of contexts. The program equips students with the knowledge and skills required to systematically evaluate environmental, economic, and societal disruptions facing the world, and has three concentrations: Sustainable Environments, Sustainable Enterprises, and Sustainable Policies.
