For informal enquiries, please contact Professor Andrea Isoni (Head of Behavioural Science) at andrea.isoni@wbs.ac.uk. You may also contact any other member of the Behavioural Science Group.

The Behavioural Science Group at WBS are recruiting for a ‘Houlden Fellow’ post for the next academic year (2025/26).

The Behavioural Science Group is a highly multidisciplinary team, drawn from psychology, economics, data science, and beyond. We are bound together by a vision of understanding, predicting, and guiding human behaviour in the widest possible range of contexts.

Our interests, approaches and styles overlap with those of other members of the group in different ways. This allows us to be highly innovative. We routinely use laboratory, field and online experiments, mathematical and economic modelling, and large datasets to explore and to test and develop theory.

We have an active research environment with weekly lab meetings, the university-wide DR@W behavioural science research seminars (which attracts leading international scholars), more informal brown-bag lunchtime presentations and professional development seminars aimed at early career researchers, and strong links to behavioural sciences in the wider University, creating a critical mass in the research environment.

While behavioural science is a core business school activity throughout the world, especially at the very top schools, WBS was unique in having the vision to create a dedicated Behavioural Science Group.

The postholder will join this outstanding research environment and will divide their time between three areas of activity: (1) progressing their own research agenda; (2) supporting current WBS research activity and (3) gaining valuable teaching experience. All Houlden Fellows will benefit from the mentoring of a Professorial colleague and the wider group, to help them develop their academic careers, over the three-year period. Houlden Fellows have their own budget for research and travel, and full access to our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities.

About You

Successful candidates will join a growing group of scholars, who enjoy working together in a developmental environment.

We are proud of a group culture based on an inclusive, supportive and positive approach, and one that values feedback, teamwork, transparency, and discussion.

Our goal is to provide an excellent environment for talented and enthusiastic researchers to achieve career and personal goals.

Background

For a new research project within a recently established Swedish research cluster on “AI, Structural Change and the Future of Work” (AISCAF), we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher. The project studies organizations' and employees' exposure to, adoption of, and adaptation to different types of AI in several countries and for decades. We will primarily combine methods from economics, statistics and computer science and use unique and comprehensive data at the micro level.

The position is at the cluster node at Örebro University, specifically at the university's research environment "Economics and Statistics" (E&S). E&S is a dynamic environment for research in economics and statistics, with links to computer science. The environment consists of approximately 35 researchers. Research includes, for example, the areas of labor markets, wellbeing and welfare, macro-financing, globalization and econometrics.

The position is specifically at the AI-Econ Lab at Örebro University (https://www.ai-econlab.com) – an international and interdisciplinary research lab that focuses on the structural transformation of organizations and work related to AI. The research is mainly empirical and benefits from rich data sources, including high-quality linked employer-employee administrative registers, own surveys, and new sources of data. The researchers are often consulted as experts by government, other organizations and media, and actively cooperate with society. The lab is linked to Örebro University's major investment in both interdisciplinary and core research in AI, for example at the Center for AI, Robotics, and Cybersecurity (ARC), the AI Impact Lab, which is one of the nodes of the Swedish national AI center, and at the reputable Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS).

Position Description

The appointment as a postdoctoral fellow is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree, to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills. The research will be pursued within the interdisciplinary research cluster “AI, Structural Change and the Future of Work” (AISCAF), which is funded by WASP-HS.

The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program – Humanity and Society (WASP-HS) is a national research program in Sweden. The vision of WASP-HS is to foster novel interdisciplinary knowledge in the humanities and social sciences about AI and autonomous systems and their impact on human and social development. WASP-HS enables cutting edge research, expertise, and competence building in the humanities and social sciences.

The interdisciplinary research cluster AISCAF connects researchers at Uppsala, Mälardalen, Stockholm and Örebro universities, as well as KTH. The researchers are economists, business economists and sociologists. The program conducts empirical studies of how the labor market is changing with AI and other technological innovations. The studies analyze both how employees are affected by the automation of some of their tasks and how they are affected when various recruitment and HR functions become AI-based. In addition, it studies how the entry of AI changes how we should design different forms of training and transition functions in society. The program currently includes 12 PhD researchers and will also include three doctoral students and newly recruited post-docs. As a postdoctoral fellow, you will be part of the interdisciplinary research group.

The duties are about being involved in the research process, from processing of microdata, exploiting new sources for data, over designing, conducting and interpreting comprehensive quantitative analyses of the microeconomic effects of AI, to report the results by writing / co-authoring manuscripts for high-quality scientific journals. The duties for this position include doing them independently and in collaboration with the responsible project manager and cluster node leader, as well as in collaboration with other related researchers. You are also expected to actively contribute to the research environment at the lab. The position does not include teaching obligations.

Qualifications

Those qualified for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher are applicants who have been awarded a doctoral degree in a subject matter relevant for the position or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree. Candidates who are expected to complete a doctoral degree after the end of the application period will also be fully considered, but in that case proof of a completed degree must be presented before the starting date. The degree is to have been awarded no more than two years prior to the starting date. If special grounds exist, a person who has been awarded their doctoral degree prior to that could also be considered. Such grounds comprise leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, positions of trust in a trade union or other similar circumstances.

Assessment criteria

A basis for the assessment is the applicant’s ability to disseminate information and communicate; collaborate and engage with the wider community; and facilitate utilization of the university’s research; as well as the ability and suitability to cooperate with other members of staff and contribute to the development of university operations.

Particular attention is to be paid to the applicant’s prospects of contributing to the future development of both research and education. Importance is also attached to a demonstrated ability and ambition to embark on a career within academia.

Other assessment criteria

We are looking for you who, in addition to a doctoral degree, also have previous experience of and excellent ability to handle and microeconometrically analyze large databases. This includes previous experience and a very good ability to work with large data sets in, for example, Python, Stata and SQL, as well as to use microeconometric methods, preferably in combination with machine learning. Your background can predominantly be in labor economics or in quantitative analysis using machine learning techniques. A background in international economics or technological development / innovation can also be an advantage. Experience of working with administrative data and text as data is an advantage.

You should also have and demonstrate:

• Motivation to conduct internationally competitive research

• A strong mathematical background

• A track record of high-quality manuscripts / publications in labor economics, machine learning, international economics or technological development / innovation

• A strong interest and potential in the project's research area

• Excellent ability to conduct empirical research

• Excellent programming and data management skills

• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

We also place emphasis on your personal qualities, your own scientific drive and curiosity, ability to work independently, in a structured way, and accurately within agreed time frames.

Further information

This is a fixed-term full-time position for two years. Funding is provided through a scholarship from the Swedish research foundation (WASP-HS).

The Director is Helen Miller and the Research Director is Imran Rasul. Research at IFS is led by a large number of Co-Directors including James Banks, Richard Blundell, Aureo de Paula, Eric French, Francois Gerard, Rachel Griffth, Attila Lindner, and Fabien Postel-Vinay.

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional economist to join our Healthcare research programme.

The successful candidate should have an excellent academic background, a track-record of producing high-quality economic research and experience of and/or commitment to working on the UK context. First rate communication skills and a capacity and willingness to manage and develop junior colleagues are essential. Experience of achieving policy impact through research or of successfully bidding for external funding would be an additional asset.

The successful candidate will build a research agenda focused on the economics of health and healthcare systems, the interaction between health and socioeconomic outcomes, and the use of UK administrative or survey data to evaluate policy.

In addition, they will be expected to engage in mentorship and development of more junior researchers, often including formal line management responsibilities, and to contribute to the wider intellectual life and running of the institute. They will work within a team of researchers whose direction of research fits with the researcher’s expertise and interests. This will likely include a mix of senior academics and IFS research staff.

This is a permanent position with a remit to help shape, carry out, and communicate empirical research. The IFS promotes from within, and the successful candidate will have scope for promotion and to develop a long-term career at IFS. The appointment will be made at the top of the pay-scale for IFS Research Economists, with the expectation of quick promotion to the position of Senior Research Economist (subject to performance), for which the salary range is currently £73,400 to £90,900. There will be considerable scope for the successful candidate to shape future research ideas and to work on new initiatives to communicate our work and shape policy debates.

We welcome applications from individuals who have completed their PhD or students expecting to complete a PhD in 2026.

Applications should be submitted via EconJobMarket. We aim to interview shortlisted candidates at the European Job Market, which will be held virtually in December 15-18, 2025. Subsequent fly-outs will be arranged in January 2026 for short-listed candidates.

If you have any queries, please email jobs@ifs.org.uk.

The Center for Mathematical Economics at Bielefeld University offers a three-year postdoctoral position. The position is allocated to the Research Training Group 'Coping with Uncertainty in Dynamic Economies' (CUDE), which is concerned with a new subfield in economic theory that merges two features central to current and future economies: uncertainty and dynamics.

Here, uncertainty is understood in the sense of Frank Knight, in that decision makers struggle to assign reliable estimates of probabilities to future events. This Knightian uncertainty is widely believed to capture our world's mega trends such as climate change, energy crisis, migration, pandemics, and technological development. Its analysis has been a central research topic in decision theory for the last two decades, and increasingly in microeconomic theory more generally, currently being explored at research centers around the world. As main innovation of our program, we seek to explore the implications of uncertainty in dynamic economies, which is vastly understudied at present but critical to answer the economic questions raised by the aforementioned mega trends. For more information, you can visit the Website: RTG 2865 CUDE

We are seeking candidates who have recently completed, or are close to completing, a PhD in economics, finance, statistics, data science or another relevant field for two Senior Economist positions.

You will be part of the Forecasting and Policy Modelling Division in the Directorate General Economics.

Consisting of around 220 staff, our Directorate General analyses, models and forecasts economic developments and policies. It contributes to analytical studies, reports and policy positions, and produces research for publications such as the ECB’s Economic Bulletin, Occasional Paper Series and Working Paper Series, as well as for academic journals. The Directorate General provides advice to the ECB’s decision-making bodies on monetary policy and prepares and coordinates the ECB’s and the Eurosystem’s staff macroeconomic projection exercises. It also contributes to the debate on further deepening Economic and Monetary Union and represents the ECB in various European and international fora.

The Division employs around 20 members of staff with recognised expertise and a strong publication record in macro modelling. We develop and maintain euro area and large country models used at the ECB for the preparation of monetary policy, together with the corresponding data and model platforms. Our research and model-based analysis contributes to the ECB’s and the Eurosystem’s macroeconomic projections, and to the preparation of Governing Council meetings more generally. We also investigate structural issues of relevance for monetary policy.

Current projects include integrating consumer, firm and sector heterogeneity into our models; evaluating the impact of monetary, fiscal and climate policies; exploiting non-traditional data sources and non-linear, machine and deep learning methods for model solution, estimation and forecasting; and methods for quantifying and interpreting risks to the economic outlook.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Senior Economist you will:

  • provide research-based policy advice and analysis;
  • plan and steer projects to strengthen the analytical framework and tools used by the Division;
  • contribute to developing a new generation of modelling tools for monetary policy preparation and maintaining existing tools;
  • conduct high-quality research for publication;
  • work closely with the Division’s management to identify and engage with upcoming opportunities and challenges;
  • establish and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external counterparts and contribute to various fora (e.g. the Monetary Policy Committee of the European System of Central Banks, as well as working groups, research conferences and networks).

For these roles we are seeking candidates who demonstrate the potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidates in their development of the required skills.

The positions offer you excellent opportunities to join a dynamic and experienced team, develop and use advanced macroeconomic modelling tools, contribute to monetary policy and learn from leading experts. You will work in a stimulating, receptive environment in which you can apply your research to monetary policy preparation. We also provide access to research assistance, top computing facilities and extensive data, as well as the opportunity to interact with consultants and attend conferences and seminars on various topics. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a PhD or equivalent in economics, finance, statistics, data science or another relevant field, or close to completing a PhD in one of these fields (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • research papers suitable for publication in high-quality, peer-reviewed academic journals in the areas of macroeconomics, macroeconometrics, forecasting, machine learning or deep learning methods;
  • excellent analytical and quantitative skills, for example in econometrics, time series, machine learning or deep learning, and experience in empirical applications of such methods;
  • excellent presenting skills;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • if you received your PhD more than three years ago, a publication record in line with your seniority, comprising papers published in high-quality, peer-reviewed academic journals.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.

Working modalities

We offer internationally competitive salaries and allowances. Taxes on salaries, allowances and benefits are paid to the European Communities instead of the national tax authorities. These positions are allocated to salary band F/G, bracket 2 (see What we offer, including the net salary table).

We would be happy to discuss a part-time arrangement for this role.

Further information

The contracts will be convertible into permanent contracts after three years subject to individual performance and organisational needs.

Application and selection process

You are eligible for appointment if you are a national of a Member State of the European Union or an acceding country.

When submitting your application, you will be asked to provide us with a CV, a copy of one of your research papers, and recommendation letters from at least two referees. All documentation must be submitted by 13 November.

The recruitment process for these positions will include a short online interview in the pre-selection phase, which will take place between 10 and 15 December 2025. If you are invited to participate in the subsequent selection phase, you will be asked to present and answer questions on your research paper in seminar format, and to attend further interviews. These seminars and interviews will take place in Frankfurt between 12 and 20 January 2026.

If you are not selected for this position but are still considered suitable, you will be placed on a reserve list (see step 4 of How we hire), from which you might be considered for similar positions within the ECB.
