With over 35 doctoral and master’s programs of the highest caliber, the Graduate Center fosters pioneering research and scholarship in the arts and sciences and prepares students for careers in universities and the private, nonprofit, and government sectors. The Graduate Center’s commitment to research and scholarship for the public good is exemplified by its more than 30 centers, institutes, and initiatives, including its Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), a 200,000 square-foot facility in upper Manhattan, designed to promote collaboration among scientists in five areas of global research and innovation: nanoscience, photonics, structural biology, neuroscience, and environmental sciences.

The Graduate Center (GC) benefits from highly ambitious and diverse students and alumni—who in turn teach hundreds of thousands of undergraduates every year. Through its public programs, the Graduate Center enhances New York City’s intellectual and cultural life.

STONE CENTER

The James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality conducts and promotes quantitative research using inequality as a lens on society, politics, and the economy. The core faculty, the affiliated and postdoctoral scholars, and the students working within the center share a commitment to scholarship that is data-driven, interdisciplinary, and policy-oriented, often addressing questions that are cross-nationally comparative or global in scope.

The Stone Center:

  • Is home to a group of six core faculty members (senior scholars) who teach sociology, political science, and economics, and who—with graduate students and external affiliated scholars—are actively engaged in research addressing diverse aspects of socio-economic inequalities;
  • Hosts the US Office of LIS, the cross-national data center in Luxembourg, with socio-economic microdata from 60+ countries;
  • Organizes public programs related to inequality and collaborates with the Graduate Center’s Office of Public Programs on several large events each year.

For more information about the Stone Center visit https://stonecenter.gc.cuny.edu/

CALL FOR ONE POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLAR

  • the measurement of poverty and well-being;
  • public policy directed to child poverty and well-being.

The postdoctoral scholar will work directly with Professor Miles Corak on a cross-national project on child-poverty and poverty in the rich countries, and have the opportunity to work individually on their own projects. This position reports to a professor and is a full-time two-year position beginning in August 2026.

In addition to the responsibilities listed under “General Duties”, the scholar will:

  • Act as co-lead on a cross-national project on poverty and poverty measurement;
  • Conduct related self-directed research that contributes to the growing national and international conversations on inequality, poverty, and child well-being as well as on feasible public and private strategies aimed at furthering fair and effective policy and institutional change;
  • Engage with other Stone Center postdoctoral scholars to build community and share research;
  • Work with the Center’s communications team to produce and disseminate public-facing scholarship, via a mix of social media tools and public programming;
  • Perform other duties, occasionally, as requested by Stone Center senior scholars or staff.

All full-time and part-time CUNY staff are expected to work in-person at their campus office 70% of their work time. For full-time staff, this is equivalent to 7 out of 10 days of in-person work in a two-week period (e.g., 7 days in-person, 3 days remote). This hybrid work schedule is subject to change.

We are looking for a talented researcher to join the Observatory on AI’s Environmental Footprint, one of the leading French initiatives investigating the environmental consequences of AI led by Ecole normale supérieure (ENS), its AI and Society Institute and its Foundation. The position will suit researchers interested in developing state-of-the-art methods in economics to develop our understanding of current and future environmental impacts of artificial intelligence.

This is an open call for applications and candidates are invited to share their research proposals, on themes including but not limited to:

  • Current and prospective modeling: develop bottom-up or top-down economic models based on technological building blocks in key economic sectors or on macro-economic data to estimate present and future environmental costs.
  • Economic value of AI and its environmental implications: explore scenarios of AI’s commercial development, particularly the rise of agentic and multi-agent systems, and assess their potential environmental impacts.
  • Indirect effects: estimate the indirect effects of AI, both positive and negative. These may include energy savings from AI deployment in specific sectors, or rebound effects resulting from widespread AI adoption.
  • Cost-benefit evaluations: assess the net environmental impact of AI in specific sectors by conducting cost-benefit analyses that factor in both environmental costs and potential gains.

This research will be central in developing the understanding of AI’s environmental footprint using economic methodologies. Your work is expected to lead to first author high-impact publications.

The Observatory on AI’s Environmental Footprint is a project led by the AI and Society Institute at ENS, with the sponsoring of Capgemini. It aims to advance research on the assessment of the environmental footprint of AI and identify avenues to mitigate its environmental toll. The project contributes to several dimensions of existing research on the environmental footprint of AI: assessing the environmental implications of data center infrastructures renewal; evaluating the indirect effects of AI (the impact that result from AI’s application) and broadening the scopes of evaluation and impact indicators. The Observatory also aims at developing mitigating strategies to reduce the environmental footprint of AI and engage policymakers in order to develop policy solutions.

We are looking for a candidate who can conduct their research independently. By joining the Observatory, you will be part of a vibrant and interdisciplinary team of researchers, including in computer science, pushing the understanding of the environmental footprint of AI. You will be hired by Ecole normale supérieure and work in one of the institutions that are partners of the Observatory: Paris School of Economics (PSE), Mines-PSL and Dauphine-PSL.

Your research project will run over three years. As part of the Observatory, you are expected to communicate on your progress and findings to an interdisciplinary community of academics and policymakers. This can be discussed during the interviews.

Preferred candidates will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) in economics and a strong interest in the intersection between computing, economics and environmental sustainability. Ability to communicate and present results to other scientists, excellent verbal/written communications skills and strong organisational skills are needed.

Candidates must hold a PhD (or possess equivalent experience). Applicants who have submitted their thesis but are awaiting final award may be considered.

As a group, we value and encourage applications from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences to contribute to the highly interdisciplinary research programme. We strongly value and encourage Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as well as a flexible working environment.

Informal enquiries are welcome and can be made to Théophile Lenoir (tmhlenoir@gmail.com).

Where: Paris

When: from January 2026 to August 2028

Salary: 55 000 € (annual gross salary), based on experience – to be discussed

Application deadline: October 31, 2025

In order to apply, please send a CV, a cover letter and two samples of your work. The cover letter should outline (1) why you are applying for this role, (2) how you match the criteria for the post, (3) what research question(s) you would be interested in pursuing (5 pages) and (4) researchers you would be interested in collaborating in the ENS ecosystem and amongst its partner organizations (the Paris School of Economics (PSE), Mines-PSL and Dauphine-PSL).

two short-term postdoctoral fellows in economics.

The positions will be available starting September 1, 2026, or later, for up to one year.

CASFI brings together economic historians and modern macroeconomists to improve our understanding of how inequality trends, cyclical fluctuations, and finance interact to shape the (macro-)economy. The center is led by Carsten Burhop and Christian Bayer.

CASFI's economics branch is closely tied to the Institute for Macroeconomics (MEE) at the University of Bonn (mee.uni-bonn.de). MEE conducts innovative research in stabilization policies, labor markets, international trade, and the role of household and firm heterogeneity—including intra-household decision-making—for the macroeconomy. The institute is affiliated with the Clusters of Excellence ECONtribute (econtribute.de) and the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (mathematics.uni-bonn.de/hcm).

Ideal candidates have an empirical or theoretical background in macroeconomics and conduct research tied to the Center’s research areas (broadly defined as inequality or finance). Requirements for a postdoctoral researcher include a Ph.D. The ideal candidate has stable employment for after the fellowship but is seeking a postdoctoral position, e.g., between finishing his or her Ph.D. and beginning an assistant professorship, or during a sabbatical.

Successful candidates are expected to contribute to the center's academic life. The center regularly hosts conferences, workshops, and a seminar series. The institute and the center use English as the working language. Although there is no teaching obligation associated with the fellowship, there are teaching opportunities.

Salary and benefits will be in accordance with a public service position in Germany (E13 TV-L, full-time) or in terms of a fellowship if the latter is preferred. Funds for travel and guests are available.

Applications, including a CV, up to two publications or research papers, and at least two letters of recommendation, should be uploaded via econjobmarket.org by October 31, 2025. Interviews will be conducted online, but later in the market once candidates have an idea about their future employment prospects.

We are pleased to announce an opportunity for a distinguished scholar to join the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) as a Full Professor (Chair) and Head of a Section within the Transportation Science Division, at the Department of Technology, Management and Economics – in short DTU Management.

The position offers a unique platform to conduct pioneering research in Human Mobility while joining DTU’s broader ecosystem of technological knowledge and innovation with the transportation sector.

The new professor will be chairing the research in human mobility and take leadership in building a group within this field and setting the academic course for the group. The department is committed to supporting this development over the coming years with significant investments. <a name="_Hlk201914303"></a>In addition to the full professorship, two new faculty positions will be added to the section (group) awaiting the new chair.

The Transportation Science Division has a strong domain knowledge of the transport sector and mobility, and is, with its broad coverage of disciplines, an internationally outstanding unit in the field of transportation science. We deliver ground-breaking fundamental research as well as research-based insights and tools for policymakers and industry professionals.

The overreaching focus is the importance of understanding human mobility and behaviour when planning and operating transportation systems and formulating policies and regulations. Human behaviour is embedded in our research on transport systems and mobility prediction models. Our research creates a foundation for policy support related to a variety of challenges in the sector, such as the green transition, mobility for all user groups, congestion and challenged land use particularly in large cities; equity, safety, and risk; and derived negative externalities of transport.

The division is interdisciplinary with scholars originating from transportation engineering, economics, psychology, computer science, social data science, machine learning, mathematics, and statistics.

Responsibilities and qualifications

We seek a professor that can build up a strong research team to advance the research and practice on human mobility, including better understanding of behaviour, preferences, and choices. The successful candidate is expected to shape and develop the profile and research agenda on the topic. Over the coming years, significant impact and external funding must be secured – and as part of that, collaboration with international academia, society, as well as technical groups across DTU, is awaited.

The new professor has a strong proven track record in research at an international level. We expect the candidate to exhibit academic leadership, attract grants, strengthen research-based advice, and build a fruitful environment based on the professorship. Particular focus will be on our public sector support and societal impact.

You will bring the following:

  • PhD in a relevant topic and discipline related to human mobility, e.g. from Social Data Science, Network Science, Transportation Science, Economics, Geography, Physics, or Computer Science
  • Experience from various application areas within the mobility and/or transport domain, and a strong list of publications in these areas
  • Experience with or interest in scientific advice and public sector consultancy
  • A solid international stakeholder network within and beyond academia

Clarifications

Some additional details to fulfill legal requirements of a recruitment in a public research institute:

A minimum requirement for the position is a completed master’s degree. Probationary period of 6 months is a default. The contract is done with the institute rather than the research area (this does not affect the nature or expected focus of work, as described in this job advertisement). The position is fixed-term due to the nature of the work and three-year funding from the Postdoctoral Programme in Research Institutes.

SENIOR DATA SCIENTIST

DART PROGRAM

ABOUT CJA

The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is a not-for-profit service and research organization that operates in partnership with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. CJA is the City’s main pretrial services agency, combining operations, pilot projects, and research under one roof. CJA utilizes procedural justice practices to provide pretrial services to over 100,000 arrested annually in New York City. Information collected about these arrestees and subsequent case processing is maintained in the agency’s internal and externally shared database systems, which are used to conduct descriptive and evaluation research on arrestee characteristics, case processing and court outcomes, and on issues and potential reforms to criminal justice policy in New York City. CJA’s programs operate in the criminal courts and detention facilities 24 hours a day seven days a week within the 5 boroughs of NYC, employing over 300 employees, citywide.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

DART – We lead research and analytics that turn CJA’s unparalleled justice system data into insights that drive policy and practice. Drawing on over 100,000 annual face-to-face interviews and comprehensive data feeds from police, courts, and corrections, we analyze complex trends, evaluate emerging policies, and apply causal techniques to assess the impact of policy and applied interventions. Through rigorous analysis, compelling visualizations, and impactful publications, we illuminate the workings of New York City’s justice system and advance new lines of inquiry to shape a fairer, more effective system.

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will deliver advanced analytics that drive policy and practice. You’ll combine expertise in causal inference—including RCTs and quasi-experimental methods—with policy relevant data analysis, predictive modeling, and modern machine learning techniques.
You’ll collaborate with DART and IT staff to build pipelines and scalable workflows, conduct exploratory and statistical analyses, and translate complex findings into intuitive and actionable products—policy briefs, interactive dashboards, and applied ML tools. You’ll collaborate with a supportive team to drive projects from scoping through delivery.

  • Causal Research & Evaluation – Design and oversee rigorous causal studies, including RCTs and quasi-experimental designs. Define evaluation frameworks, identify appropriate counterfactuals, and ensure methodological rigor in estimating policy and operational impacts. Conduct power and sample size calculations to optimize the design of RCTs and quasi-experimental studies. Translate findings from causal analyses into actionable recommendations that inform policy and practice.
  • Research Dissemination and Communication – Deliver policy briefs, presentations, and interactive dashboards that translate complex findings into actionable, decision-ready evidence.
  • Partner with city agencies, nonprofits, and justice system stakeholders to scope projects and align research with operational needs. Support public and stakeholder engagement by presenting results at conferences, policy forums, and cross-agency working groups.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in applied data science, analytics, or research roles, ideally in policy or civic tech. A strong portfolio of self-directed analytic work is expected. Experience in the justice system is a plus.

OVERVIEW

Opportunity Insights (OI) at Harvard University is hiring several full-time predoctoral fellows to start in Summer 2026 to work with our research group and under the direction of Raj Chetty, John Friedman, and Nathan Hendren. OI is a nonpartisan research and policy institute focused on improving economic opportunity. Founded in 2018, OI has become a nationally and internationally recognized leader in the science of economic mobility and in the use of large administrative data to understand and address inequality. OI has published seminal work on national trends in upward mobility; racial disparities; the role of neighborhoods, social capital, credit, and higher education in upward mobility; and the use of private-sector data to understand disparate impacts in the recent economic recession and recovery. Much of the team’s ongoing research uses quasi-experimental methods to identify causal effects and test the predictions of economic and sociological models. Examples of current research projects include: long-term impacts of neighborhoods and place-based policies, the role of colleges and workforce training in upward mobility, and measuring how social networks affect mobility. OI’s work has shaped policy discussions at the national and local level, with nearly a dozen of its studies covered on the front pages of major media outlets, such as the New York Times, The Economist, The Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, and have been widely cited in policy discussions.

Fellows will be based at Harvard or Brown Universities under the direction of Professors Chetty, Friedman, and Hendren. The fellowship will include a variety of tasks that provide preparation for graduate school or other industry research positions, such as analyzing data, developing statistical models, creating presentations, and editing research papers. In addition to working with OI faculty, predoctoral fellows frequently co-author papers with other students or faculty members. Fellows will interact regularly with professors and their collaborators – such as Stefanie DeLuca, Benny Goldman, Matthew Jackson, Larry Katz, Theresa Kuchler, Michael Stepner, and Johannes Stroebel – in a team-oriented lab environment, with regular lab meetings, seminars, and other events. Fellows also have the opportunity to support our research translation and policy work through such resources as the Opportunity Atlas, the Social Capital Atlas, and the Economic Tracker.

Fellows are invited to participate in broader activities at Harvard and Brown, including seminars and courses. The program serves as an ideal bridge between college and graduate school for students interested in empirical economics. Most previous fellows have gone on to top Ph.D. programs. Salary and benefits are competitive with other top predoctoral fellowships.

As an organization focused on economic mobility, we welcome applications from persons with varied backgrounds and perspectives. Even if applicants are uncertain whether their technical research skill or subject-matter knowledge will be competitive, we strongly encourage applications. Applicants should have completed a bachelor’s degree (or be on track to complete by July 2026) or master’s degree, have strong quantitative skills, and experience with empirical research methods. Candidates with research experience are strongly preferred, especially those with programming experience in Stata, SAS, R, and/or Python. Candidates need not be Economics majors, though they should have a strong interest in and some experience with Economics. Successful candidates have come from a variety of backgrounds (including from undergraduate and graduate programs, industry jobs, and other research assistant positions), and have a range of skill levels and experience with coding.

Fellowships will begin around July 1, 2026. Fellows typically work at OI full-time for two years before starting graduate school in Economics or another social science or pursuing other related career paths.

Note: Persons may only apply once during the 2025-2026 academic year. If you apply during the Fall 2025 hiring session and are not selected, you will not be eligible to reapply until the 2026-2027 Academic Year (i.e., Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 hiring rounds).

COMMITMENT TO NON-DISCRIMINATION Harvard University is committed to equal opportunity and non-discrimination. We seek talent from all parts of society and the world, and we strive to ensure everyone at Harvard thrives. Our differences help our community advance Harvard’s academic purposes.

Harvard has an equal employment opportunity policy that outlines our commitment to prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, sex, ethnicity, color, national origin, religion, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law or identified in the university’s non-discrimination policy. Harvard’s equal employment opportunity policy and non-discrimination policy help all community members participate fully in work and campus life free from harassment and discrimination.
