Tampere University is inviting applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Economics. Economics at Tampere University is part of the degree program in business studies at the Faculty of Management and Business. We provide an internationally standardized Economics program at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

The person to be appointed will be part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Tax Systems Research (FIT). FIT studies the effects and design of multiple aspects of public policy. Our research program is very broad, covering a multitude of topics related to public finance, labor, health, and environmental economics, and industrial organization. Our research utilizes empirical, experimental, and theoretical methods, together with world-class register data on individuals and firms.

Job description:

We seek an accomplished early-career academic with the potential to organize and conduct innovative, top-quality research in their field. The position is part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Tax Systems Research, but the exact field of specialization within economics is open. We expect the Assistant Professor to produce research papers for top international academic journals. The tasks of the Assistant Professor will also involve research-based teaching and student supervision, as well as contributing to curriculum development and the overall development of the discipline.

We require:

  • PhD degree in Economics. The PhD should be completed by the application deadline.
  • Ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to produce research at a high international level of excellence.
  • Teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.

We are looking for candidates who have recently completed their PhD degree in Economics. Applicants will be reviewed based on their potential for excellence in research, teaching, and activity in the international scientific community. We emphasize innovativeness and ambition demonstrated by current and planned research, as well as international experience and research collaboration. We appreciate both high-level empirical and theoretical expertise and the person to be appointed is expected to contribute to teaching core courses in economics also at the advanced level. The applicant’s research interests should be linked to the broad research areas of FIT and may include applied research topics, methodological and/or theoretical themes that complement or bring in new perspectives to FIT. The precise field of specialization is open. The position requires fluency in English.

We offer:

The anticipated start date will be 1 September 2024, unless another date is mutually agreed. Initial appointment as Assistant Professor is for five years (1.9.2024-31.8.2029) and, subject to successful performance, the tenure-track Assistant Professor will become a tenured member of faculty at the end of the first five-year period. The principles of the tenure evaluation are laid out here. Support will be provided throughout the five-year appointment to ease transition to a permanent faculty position. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The minimum starting salary of an Assistant Professor is between 4300-4700 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed upon depending on qualifications and experience.
