Professor Giuseppe Berlingieri is searching a highly skilled and motivated full-time (40 hours per week) pre-doctoral research assistant for a period of at least one year (renewable), starting in October 2024. The employment contract will be with Bocconi University located in Milan, Italy. However, the position offers a flexible work arrangement, allowing the employee to work on a partial remote basis as well as the opportunity to work occasionally from ESSEC Business School located in Cergy-Pontoise, France.

The RA will play a key role in supporting Giuseppe Berlingieri, Danial Lashkari, and the research team by contributing to various aspects of the project "Merchant-bankers and the Organisation of Long-Distance Trade" (MOLDisTory), which studies the role of merchant-bankers and the interconnection between trade and financial intermediation in early modern Europe (XVI-XVII century), using unique primary data from the archives of the Bank of San Giorgio.

The RA will be expected to be responsible for a wide variety of tasks including:

  • Collection, cleaning and preparation of unstructured data.
  • Data analysis: preparation of charts / graphs / tables and the use of econometric analysis for the development of descriptive statistics and the estimation of economic models.
  • Exploring machine learning techniques for handwritten text recognition.
  • Performing literature reviews.
  • Assisting in the writing of reports and academic papers.
  • Supporting the MOLDisTory research team on the various tasks of the project.

Key requirements:

  • MSc in Economics / Finance / Management (or close to completion).
  • Strong quantitative background.
  • Proficiency with statistical software and computer programming (STATA, R, Python).
  • Proficiency in English, knowledge of Italian is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Soft skills: diligence, reliability, independence, attention to detail.
