The National Bank of Slovakia invites applications for up to ten positions entitled

Senior Economist / Economist

in its Economic and Monetary Analysis, Research, Economic Education and Technical Assistance, and Strategic Initiatives Departments.

The National Bank of Slovakia is Slovakia’s central bank, and a part of the Eurosystem / European System of Central Banks (ESCB).

Our aim is to further improve our reputation as a highly regarded, mid-sized European central bank with outstanding specialist knowledge in specific areas. As a part of this strategic effort, we are embarking on a significant expansion of our international team of economists.

This year, we will particularly welcome applications from job market candidates working on:

  • monetary policy
  • macroeconomic topics using micro data in areas such as productivity and firm-level performance, international trade, banking, macroprudential policy and financial stability, and the real estate market
  • labour market analysis including population ageing and migration
  • economic and financial implications of climate change
  • public policies more broadly

Successful candidates working in policy units will be involved in and responsible for regular contributions to the bank’s key analytical reports. Some of that work may lead to research publications but independent research will also be encouraged and rewarded.

In the Research Department, successful candidates will conduct relevant, policy-oriented research, with opportunities for international collaboration with other central banks and academic institutions. Publication activity is a core responsibility.

In the Economic Education Department, successful candidates will also take an active part in the design and delivery of the bank’s planned graduate economic education programme.

We invite applications from candidates with the following qualifications:

  • PhD in economics and finance or in a related field with a significant quantitative component

  • experience in applied economic analysis from a policy institution or teaching would be an asset

  • advanced econometric, data analysis or programming skills, and practical experience with common econometric and/or mathematical software (e.g. Stata, R, Python, Matlab or other)

  • excellent command of English; knowledge of Slovak is not a requirement

  • basic understanding of Central European economies would be an asset

We also value if our employees have:

  • the ability to work on projects as a part of an international team

  • excellent communication and presentation skills, including towards a non-specialist audience

  • an innovative, creative and proactive approach to solving problems

    We offer:

  • extensive opportunities for personal development and networking as a part of ESCB structures

  • further training and external engagement opportunities (seminar, conference visits) generously funded by the bank

  • quick progression to a permanent contract subject to performance

  • an informal work environment involving a close contact with the top management

  • opportunities for quick and effective policy and societal impact

  • great quality of life in a mid-sized European city very close to a globally well-connected airport in Vienna

  • a regionally highly competitive salary and a range of attractive benefits

Slovak law requires us to state that the basic pay component of the remuneration is not going to be lower than 2,150 EUR gross monthly. Senior economists typically earn upwards of 50,000 EUR in gross terms annually including variable pay components
