Postdoctoral Research Positions in Economics and Data Science at ETH Zurich

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at ETH Zurich is pleased to announce openings for two postdoctoral researcher positions in economics and data science. These positions offer an excellent opportunity to advance independent research within a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment at one of the world’s top research institutions.

About the Positions: We are looking for candidates with a solid background in applied microeconomics who are eager to employ advanced data science techniques. This includes machine learning and deep learning methods, especially within natural language processing (NLP), to tackle critical social and economic questions. This position is ideal for researchers with strong expertise in data-driven methods and a commitment to interdisciplinary, impactful research.

Responsibilities:

 • Lead and participate in all phases of research, including project planning, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
 • Collaborate closely with team members and engage in extensive international research networks.
 • Present research findings at conferences and contribute to high-impact, peer-reviewed publications.
 • Contribute to the development of grant proposals to secure funding for future research initiatives.
 • Engage in minimal teaching or organizational duties as mutually agreed.

Preferred Qualifications:

 • A PhD in Economics or a related field with an established research background.
 • Proficiency in data science tools, particularly Stata and Python, with a strong foundation in machine learning techniques, including deep learning. Experience in natural language processing (NLP) is highly desirable, given its relevance to complex language data analysis.
 • Strong skills in econometrics and advanced data analysis.
 • Excellent English writing skills

Why ETH Zurich? These roles offer a starting salary of approximately 105K USD (at current exchange rates) and an initial one-year appointment, renewable up to three years based on performance. Located in Zurich, ETH Zurich provides an internationally vibrant research environment with English as the primary working language.

Collaborative Network: The successful candidates will work under the supervision of Prof. Elliott Ash and Dr. Sergio Galletta, alongside a dedicated group of Ph.D. students and research assistants. Our team actively collaborates with prestigious institutions, including the Columbia, MIT, Princeton, Harvard, UCL, LSE, ETH AI Center, University of Zurich, and others, offering numerous opportunities for global networking and research collaboration.

Start Date: The expected start date is September 1, 2025, with flexibility for earlier or laters start dates.

For inquiries, please contact Prof. Elliott Ash at elliott.ash@gess.ethz.ch or Dr. Sergio Galletta at sergio.galletta@gess.ethz.ch.
