The Institute for Employment Research (IAB) is inviting applications for a postdoctoral researcher in labour economics. The successful candidate will join the Research Department Establishments and Employment and contribute to a third-party funded project on gig work in Germany. Proficiency in German at the C1 level (according to the CEFR) is required for this position.
The Institute for Employment Research IAB is the independent research institute of the German Federal Employment Agency. As one of Europe's leading institutions for labour market research, the IAB provides evi-dence-based advice to policymakers and informs the public about current labour market trends. Located in Nuremberg, the institute maintains strong collaborations with national and international universities and research institutions.
The successful candidate will be integrated into a research project on gig work in Germany, with a particular focus on app-based delivery services. The project investigates the growth and workforce composition of the German gig economy, evaluates its benefits and challenges from a worker’s perspective, and explores its broader labour market implications. Launched in 2023, the project is led by a team that includes Dr Martin Friedrich, Professor Ines Helm, Dr Christoph Müller, and Dr Jan Nimczik. It is generously funded by the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs BMAS.
The main responsibility of the postdoctoral researcher involves collaborating on joint academic publications. The position holder is expected to analyse existing research data using advanced econometric methods and support the collection of additional data (e.g., through surveys). After a period of onboarding, the assumption of project management responsibilities is also expected. Furthermore, the findings from the project will be used to inform and advise key stakeholders of the IAB - especially the BMAS - as well as the broader public.
The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background, including a university degree and a doctorate or equivalent qualification, preferably in economics. Extensive professional experience in the field of empirical labour economics is essential, along with knowledge of German economic, labour market, and social policy. The position requires advanced expertise in empirical research methods and their practical application, as well as strong skills in statistical analysis and proficiency in at least one statistical programming language (such as Stata, Python, or R). Familiarity with LaTeX and relevant MS Office applications is also expected. Strong presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate scientific findings to both academic and policy audiences are essential. Expertise in project management is an asset. Proficiency in German at the C1 level (according to the CEFR) and English at the B2 level is required.

We offer a full-time position (39 hours per week) until December 31, 2027. A continuation of employment is intended, subject to the availability of suitable positions. The IAB offers a tenure-track program, for which the position holder may apply at a later stage.
Compensation starts at approximately €4,700 gross per month (full-time) under the Federal Employment Agency's collective agreement (level II, step 1). With a relevant PhD or at least two peer-reviewed publica-tions, the starting salary increases to around €5,200 (level I, step 1). Prior relevant experience may qualify for a higher pay level. Additional components include an annual bonus and occupational pension (VBL) subject to sufficiently long tenure.
