The Department of Economics invites applicants within the following fields:

  • Macroeconomics: We encourage applications from both candidates with applied and theoretical research interests to apply
  • Microeconomic theory and Applied Microeconomic theory
  • International trade
  • Development economics

Appointments will be in the rank of tenure track Assistant Professor, tenure track Associate Professor or tenured Associate Professor. The tenure-track positions are fulltime positions for a period of seven years. Anticipated start date for all positions will be August 1, 2026.

Tenure evaluations will follow the Department’s tenure track requirements, which outline the quality and quantity of research output that is expected, as well as expected performance in teaching, academic citizenship and dissemination.

For candidates to a tenured position, the assessment will emphasize the performance over the last five years, and the tenure requirements for the tenure-track position are informative of both the quality and quantity of research output that is expected.

Tenured positions at the University of Oslo require proficiency in Norwegian. Appointees that are not fluent in a Scandinavian language must acquire a Norwegian skills equivalent to B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years. Within three years of tenure the candidate must be able to actively participate in all functions that the employment requires, including teaching.

The positions come with both undergraduate and graduate teaching responsibilities at the Department of economics.

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Economics by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, and no later than September 30, 2026. Candidates for a tenure-track position should have achieved a PhD degree no earlier than 2021 (additional time may be allowed for leave related to childbirth or adoption).

Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in research of the highest international caliber in one of the fields listed above. This can be demonstrated by an innovative job market paper with a significant contribution to the literature, high-quality working papers, (forthcoming) publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals, strong recommendations by referees who themselves have a record of excellence in research of the highest international caliber, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, and awards and accolades.

Candidates should have a record of excellence in teaching. Evidence of excellence in teaching should be provided through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, a teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, teaching evaluations, or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars and student mentorship.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our departmental strengths. To be considered for a position candidates should motivate their application considering the Department’s overall research profile and location.

Some positions are associated with the externally funded projects WaCoMacro, EXPLOIT, and a new research centre for internationa economics "NORCIE." Candidates should, when applicable, articulate how they can contribute to and strengthen these projects.

The deadline for applications is November 30, 2025. Applications must be submitted online at https://econjobmarket.org/.

A complete application must include a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; a research statement outlining current and future research interests and how the candidate’s research profile matches one or more of the fields listed in the posting; a job market paper (clearly labeled); other working papers or publications; a teaching dossier (which includes a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, and teaching evaluations or evidence of superior performance in other teaching-related activities as listed above); and three recent letters of reference (on letterhead, dated, and signed) uploaded directly by referees.

Candidates are asked to specify in which field they apply for a position, and whether they want to be considered for a tenure-track position or a tenured position.

Interviews will be conducted online, around the time of the European Job Market, 15-18 December. We will invite a limited number of candidates for job talks/campus visits in January or early February.
