The Department of Economics at Aalto University invites applications for a 3-year post-doctoral researcher position, starting no later than September 2026. We welcome applicants with experience in applied microeconomics broadly defined and prefer candidates with strengths in urban, transportation or spatial economics. Applicants should hold a doctoral degree (or be near completion of the doctorate) in economics or a related field. The applicants will be reviewed based on their research and activity in the scientific community, and their fit with the research team.

The fellowship is funded by a Research Council of Finland grant titled “Resilient road networks: Evidence from worldwide travel disruptions”. The researcher will be working closely with our international team of collaborators: Professors Prottoy Akbar (Aalto), Victor Couture (Toronto), Gilles Duranton (Wharton), Adam Storeygard (Tufts), Pablo Warnes (Aalto), and Dr. Morgan Ubeda (INRAE), and will work on one or more projects related to the resilience of transportation infrastructure and travel networks to extreme weather and road incidents (some examples of past and ongoing projects: https://citiesinmotionlab.org/). The post-doctoral researcher will also have time to work on their independent research projects, and will have access to remarkable data, infrastructure, travel funds, and mentorship from the team to develop their own research agendas.

The postdoctoral researcher will join a vibrant community of researchers at the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (Helsinki GSE, https://www.helsinkigse.fi), which brings together economists from three Finnish universities (including University of Helsinki and Hanken School of Economics) and collaborates closely with the VATT Institute for Economic Research. We expect the researcher to be an active member of this community and more specifically the urban economics research group (https://www.helsinkigse.fi/groups/urban-economics), participate in graduate student supervision, and teach one six-week course per academic year on quantitative methods in spatial economics or a related field.

The primary workplace is Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus in Espoo, next to Finland’s capital Helsinki. Consistent with EU insurance and pension regulations, Aalto expects full-time academic employees to reside and work in Finland. The Otaniemi campus is a thriving and vibrant community, and filled with amazing architecture, calming nature, and a variety of cafes, restaurants, services and good connections along the recently opened metro and fast tram lines.
