The Faculty of Law and Economics, School of Economics and Business, at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) jointly invite applications for an
Assistant Professorship in Empirical Labour Economics (German pay grade W1)
JEL Classification: C, D, J
We are looking for a candidate with outstanding academic potential in the field of empirical labour economics. The position is geared toward micro-based labour market research, with a focus on firms and workers. A strong background in areas such as structural change in labour markets, the allocation of human capital, productivity, or wage formation is particularly welcome.
The Assistant Professorship strengthens the collaboration between the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH). The IWH is one of the seven economic research institutes of the Leibniz Association in Germany (www.iwh-halle.de). It focuses on applied research in labor, productivity, finance, and macroeconomics. The position is associated with the Department for Labour Markets at IWH and contributes to the MLU’s strategic research focus on labour market transformations.
Candidates should demonstrate strong potential for publications in leading international journals. An excellent academic network and experience in acquiring third-party funding are advantageous. The teaching load is two hours per week (i.e., one course per semester). Knowledge of the German language is not required. Further duties and responsibilities are stipulated in section 34 of the Saxony‑Anhalt Higher Education Act.
Applicants must fulfill the requirements of being appointed according to Section 40 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities. In particular, the prerequisites for employment are a completed university degree, pedagogical ability and a particular aptitude for scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by the outstanding quality of a doctorate. As a rule, the time period between the final doctoral degree examination and the application for this junior professorship should not exceed six years (family-related reductions in working hours are taken into account appropriately when assessing the academic age).
The position is a fixed-term civil servant contract (Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit) under public law. The initial term is three years, with a three-year extension following a successful interim evaluation. The appointment is scheduled to begin in fall 2027.
MLU and IWH are committed to increasing the share of women in academic positions and strongly encourage qualified women to apply. The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg strives to provide an environment compatible with work-life balance and has been certified as a family-friendly university since 2009. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in cases of equal qualification, competence, and professional performance.
Application documents should include: a curriculum vitae, reference letters or contact details of referees, a list of publications, a list of conference presentations, documentation of third-party funding, and evidence of teaching experience including evaluation reports. Please submit your application electronically by November 27, 2026 via the MLU’s appointment portal:
