The School of Economics within the College of Business at the University of Leicester invites applications for permanent positions at the rank of Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor), starting in September 2027. The field of specialisation is open. Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in economics or a closely related discipline.

The successful candidates will undertake a balanced portfolio of research, teaching, and administration. We are looking for candidates with an emerging record of high-quality research and a clearly articulated research programme with the potential to influence their field and produce outputs of international excellence. Candidates should be able to provide evidence of excellence in teaching, or a strong commitment to it, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The roles also involve supervising postgraduate students, contributing to curriculum development, and engaging with business, policy, and other external stakeholders.

The School of Economics brings together economists across a wide range of fields. Economics and related subjects have been taught at the University of Leicester going back to the 1920s, and the School continues in a long tradition of theoretical and empirical research. Our expertise spans many areas: behavioural, business, development, econometrics, environmental, experimental, finance, growth and innovation, health, industrial organisation, international/trade, labour, microeconomic theory, monetary and fiscal policy, public, and others.

Members of the School belong to at least one of four research groups: Applied Microeconomics, Econometrics, Industrial Economics/Organisation, and Macroeconomics. Many members of the School are also active in the Choice Research Centre and conduct experiments in the Leicester Experimental Economics Laboratory. Both the School and the Centre hold regular seminars and workshops.

As a diverse and forward-thinking employer, the University of Leicester embeds the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion into everything it does. That includes not just its core missions of teaching and research, but also its support for staff, students, and the local community, guided by its values: Inspiring, Impactful, and Inclusive. Applications from candidates of all backgrounds are encouraged. The University is committed to the well-being of all its staff and to the sustainability of the environment, on campus and beyond. It offers a competitive salary package, an excellent pension scheme, and a generous annual leave allowance, along with opportunities to develop academic careers in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Applications must be submitted through EconJobMarket.org. To be guaranteed full consideration, they must be received by 22 November 2026, although applications will be accepted until 30 November 2026. Applications should contain at least a cover letter, a CV, a job market paper, and three letters of reference.

Candidates who applied for the earlier Lecturer in Economics vacancy (ref. 13459) must submit their job market materials through EconJobMarket for full consideration.

First-round interviews will be conducted online as part of the European Job Market for Economists on 14–17 December 2026. Shortlisted candidates will subsequently be invited to visit the University of Leicester in January or February 2027 to present their research and meet members of the School. The School is within walking distance of Leicester railway station and around 70 minutes by train from central London.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof. Levent Celik, Chair of Junior Recruitment (lc522@leicester.ac.uk), or to ulsb.recruitment@le.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly by email will not be accepted.
