Národná banka Slovenska (NBS), the central bank of the Slovak Republic, invites applications for a Senior Economist position to lead applied, policy-relevant research at the intersection of climate change and central banking.

NBS is a member of the Eurosystem and the European System of Central Banks (ESCB). It contributes to the formulation and implementation of euro area monetary policy, supervises Slovakia’s financial market, and works to safeguard financial stability. Working within the ESCB network, you will contribute to European policy discussion on climate change while shaping NBS’s climate agenda. You will have access to unique and highly granular central-bank datasets, collaborate with a broad network of ESCB climate researchers, and bridge quantitative analysis with real monetary and financial stability policy decisions.

While climate economics is a central focus of this vacancy, NBS is also interested in outstanding economists with a broader profile in applied macroeconomics and monetary economics. We therefore encourage applications from candidates whose research can contribute more broadly to NBS’s analysis of the Slovak and euro area economies and to monetary-policy discussions within the Eurosystem. Relevant fields may include inflation, labour markets, productivity, fiscal policy, international trade and competitiveness, business cycles, and monetary-policy transmission.

The role

You will lead independent research and analytical projects on climate change and its implications for one or more of the following core domains: monetary policy, financial stability, energy markets, and central-bank investment portfolios. Your analysis will directly support institutional reporting, strategic decision-making, and delivery of the NBS’s Climate Strategy. This role emphasises rigorous, evidence-based policy insights over purely academic research.

Reporting to the Head of Unit, you will work closely with colleagues across economic research, monetary policy analysis, and other departments.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying high-relevance policy research questions informed by priorities set by NBS management, the Climate Committee’s agenda, and wider EU and ESCB policy and research developments.
  • Designing and executing rigorous quantitative analytical projects using appropriate economic frameworks, granular datasets, and state-of-the-art quantitative methods.
  • Translating complex academic findings into actionable policy insights and clearly communicating both the implications and limitations of findings for subject-matter specialists and senior decisionmakers.
  • Producing policy briefs, working papers, public-facing blog posts, and internal analytical notes.
  • Mentoring junior economists and engaging with the broader European central banking and climate research community.

Your work will be rooted in NBS’s institutional priorities, with opportunities for academic publication and related research, subject to available capacity.

Qualifications

Required:

  • PhD in Economics, Finance, or a closely related quantitative field awarded prior to the contract start date.
  • Advanced experience in applied econometrics, data analytics, and programming with practical familiarity with software such as Stata, R, Python, QGIS, or MATLAB.
  • Excellent command of English; Knowledge of Slovak is NOT required.

Assets:

  • A track record of research on climate-related macroeconomics, financial stability risks, energy economics, or sustainable finance.
  • A demonstrated research expertise in applied macroeconomics, monetary economics, or a related policy-relevant field may substitute for a specific research background in climate economics.
  • Experience writing policy-oriented research for audiences in central banks or other public-sector institutions.
  • Experience presenting research findings and policy analysis to mixed audiences of economists, policymakers, and technical experts.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to convey complex analytical insights to non-specialist audiences.
  • A proactive and innovative approach to problem-solving.

Employment terms and compensation

This is intended as a long-term position. In line with NBS's standard employment practice, new hires are initially appointed on a one-year contract with a three-month probationary period. Subject to satisfactory performance, the appointment is expected to continue and may lead to a permanent position.

Senior economists typically earn €50,000 or more gross annually, including variable pay. The statutory minimum basic pay for this position is €2,400 gross per month.

We offer:

  • An international, collaborative working environment with direct access to senior economists, researchers, and policymakers across the European Central Bank network and Network for Greening the Financial System.
  • Opportunity to contribute to policy decisions with wider institutional and societal implications.
  • Early involvement in impactful analytical work, with opportunities to grow your research, presentation, and policy communication skills.
  • Access to NBS-funded training, seminars, and conference participation.
  • Flexible working hours and fully funded annual team-building retreats.
  • Attractive benefits and an office located in a modern European capital, easily reachable by international commuters and close to major transport links (e.g., Vienna International Airport).

Application and selection

Please submit a CV, a one-page cover letter explaining your interest in the position and your suitability for it, a sample of recent research or an alternative relevant analytical work, and at least two letters of recommendation by 22 November 2026, 23:59 UTC. These materials will form an important part of the evaluation process.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview, starting in December 2026. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Selection follows standard economics-recruitment practices. We are looking for an economist with a strong focus on applied policy research. Our evaluation will focus on your broader analytical capabilities rather than solely on the topic of your academic job-market paper. You are welcome to submit an alternative work sample if it demonstrates a stronger fit with this role.

There are NO nationality restrictions. Successful candidates must obtain any necessary visas and residence or work permits. NBS assists with permits but not visas.
