About: Applied Economics
The Department of Applied Economics works on economic questions that matter for society. We aim for world-leading research that firms, consumers and governments can use. Our researchers are affiliated with the Tinbergen Institute, one of Europe's leading research institutes and graduate schools in economics, econometrics and finance. They are also affiliated with the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM), where we work with colleagues from Rotterdam School of Management (RSM).
Our department has three sections:
Behavioural Economics – We study how people make decisions under risk and uncertainty, over time, and in social settings. We want to understand what shapes behaviour, and we design interventions that help people make better decisions. Topics include health behaviour, financial decisions, security, and unethical behaviour such as lying and cheating. We combine decision theory with field, laboratory and online experiments.
Health Economics – We are one of the larger groups of health economists at a school of economics in Europe. Our main topics are health inequality, health behaviour, global health, social science genetics, and various topics at the intersection of health and labour economics. Most of our work is empirical, often using quasi-experimental methods and linked administrative data on the Dutch population.
Strategy Economics – We do theory-based empirical research on the organisation of firms, industries and markets. Our fields include applied industrial organisation, entrepreneurship, innovation, and regional and urban economics. The section sits at the intersection of economics and business studies, and targets top journals in both economics and management. Our staff also carry out studies for policy makers and industry.
There are many links between the three sections. We particularly, but not exclusively, welcome candidates whose work connects two or more sections.
