Applications are invited for a post-doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Economics at University College London to work on the research project “Liquidity Policies in the 21st Century” which has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) (Consolidator Award) under the European Union’s Horizon (2021-2027) research and innovation programme.

Professor Saleem Bahaj, the Principal Investigator, is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to work on this exciting project from September 2027 for two years (negotiable).

About the Research Project

Central banks are the guardians of financial stability, but modern markets face unprecedented risks that traditional policies struggle to address. The ERC-funded “Liquidity Policies in the 21st Century” project is redesigning liquidity strategies to fit this complex landscape. By examining how banks manage reserves and deposits under today’s regulatory constraints, the project identifies more efficient ways to control inflation and fiscal costs. It further investigates how lender-of-last-resort support can be tailored to distinguish between cautious hedgers and risky speculators. Finally, the project explores how targeting specific institutions can maximise the economic boost of liquidity injections. These insights provide a vital roadmap for policymakers to ensure Europe’s financial systems remain resilient and effective in a rapidly evolving global economy.
