Tilburg University is a modern university, specialized in the social sciences and the humanities. It is internationally known for its high standards in education and scientific research as well as its good support facilities. The Tilburg University campus offers both quietness and connectivity as it is located in a wooded park, ten minutes away from the city center, main highways, and railways. A mid-sized city of 200,000 inhabitants in the South of the Netherlands, and in proximity to Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, and London, Tilburg is located at the very heart of Europe.
The Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC), a Center of Excellence at Tilburg University, is a joint research institute of the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM) and the Tilburg Law School (TLS). TILEC gathers economists and legal scholars to perform academically path-breaking and societally relevant research on the governance of economic activity. Our upcoming research program for the period 2018-2022, on "Governance of Economic Activity in the Digital Society," focuses on three themes, which fully exploit the expertise acquired within TILEC since its creation in 2003:
1. Institutions
2. Competition & Regulation
3. Innovation
As part of its efforts to implement the upcoming research program, TILEC advertises two positions for Postdoctoral Researchers: one position on the Economic Governance of Data-driven Markets, and another on the Economics of Innovation. The starting date for both positions is September 2018. Both researchers will be geographically and administratively located at TiSEM, in the Department of Economics, and will become senior members of TILEC.
Postdoctoral Researcher on the Economic Governance of Data-driven Markets: This is a three-year position targeted at promising researchers in economics or related fields who work on the effects of digitalization and datafication on institutions, including markets, legal and political institutions. We are looking for a researcher who combines expertise in the quantitative techniques of modern economics with an interest both in technologies currently transforming our societies, industries, polities, and jurisdictions and with a sincere openness to interdisciplinary research approaches from other social sciences. Within this field, all types of research interests are welcome, with a slight preference for researchers performing empirical work. The ability to work with big data sets, e.g. by using Python, is an asset but no must.
The successful candidate will serve as the link between TILEC and the broader Tilburg University Data Science community. This may involve a small load of administrative duties, for instance, to coordinate TILEC’s efforts to obtain outside funding for this research line, on top of a light teaching load at the Department of Economics (representing 0.2 fte). Teaching duties include thesis supervision of bachelor or master students. Active involvement in other activities at TILEC is also expected.
Postdoctoral Researcher on the Economics of Innovation: This is a two-year position targeted at promising researchers in economics or related fields who work on the Economics of Innovation. Within this field, all types of research interests are welcome but preference will be given to researchers performing empirical work and/or working on standardization and standard-setting. Some minor teaching duties (representing 0.2 fte) are associated with the position; they include some thesis supervision of bachelor or master students. Some involvement in the planning and organization of the research and other activities of TILEC is also expected.
Requirements
Candidates for the positions must evidence the following qualifications:
(i) A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in economics or a related field (or a PhD manuscript approved by July 2018);
(ii) Research experience and publications commensurate with the stage at which the candidate finds her- or himself in her or his career but indicative of a strong ability to publish in the best scientific journals;
(iii) Genuine interest in performing in an interdisciplinary research environment;
(iv) Experience or willingness to participate in research funding efforts;
(v) Strong command of English.
Terms of employment
Tilburg University offers competitive European salaries. The salary for a full-time contract ranges between €3475 and €4757 per month (not included various allowances). For researchers coming from outside the Netherlands, under certain conditions the university can apply for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of taxable salary. The university offers very good fringe benefits: the possibility to determine benefits individually, excellent reimbursement of relocation costs, etc.
Applications
Applications and accompanying documents should be submitted by December 10, 2017 via econjobmarket.org. Applications should include a cover letter specifying for which position the candidate is applying and indicating how the candidate meets the requirements set out above, as well as a curriculum vitae, copies of relevant written work, and two letters of recommendation.
The most promising candidates will be invited for interviews during the ASSA meetings in Philadelphia in January 2018. If you are not planning to attend the ASSA meetings, online interviews are possible in selected cases.
