The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) is well-known for a multidisciplinary educational approach, along with an excellent international network. The Department of Economics and Finance (DEF) started its operations in March 2013 following the merger of three research institutes to promote and coordinate research in all fields of economics and finance. DEF goal is to foster high quality research with a relevant policy impact, promoting an international academic environment. Most of the faculty members are publishing intensively on leading economic journals. Many scholars are also columnists of major financial newspapers and involved in consulting activities for governmental commissions and national and international agencies, such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the European Fiscal Board. According to the most recent recent Repec rankings, DEF is one of the best economic institutions in Italy and among the top-5% economic institutions in Europe. Currently, DEF stands on a faculty of 44 members (15 full professors; 9 associate professors; 12 assistant professors; 8 post-doc researchers).

 Job Summary

UCSC seeks applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position (Ricercatore a Tempo Determinato RTD-B) in the field of Public Economics. The main research areas of interest are local public finance, political economics, health economics. Candidates working in other areas of public finance are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should be able to produce excellent research work, publishable in leading field journals, as well as to contribute to the design and implementation of international competitive research projects. The successful candidate must meet the hiring requirements established by the UCSC School of Economics for junior researchers.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching load:  60 hours, at undergraduate and graduate levels

Research activities: publish in the leading journals of the field. Design and implement international competitive research projects.

Departmental support: participate in departmental and institutional activities, including committee work, both at the Department and School level.

  

Term

Tenure track. After 3 years in the position and conditional on having been granted the required national scientific certification (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale) to become associate professor at an Italian university, the researcher’s achievements will be assessed by UCSC, also taking into account the School of Economics’ minimum scientific hiring requirements for associate professor. In case of positive evaluation, she/he will be promoted to the position of Associate Professor.

  

Salary Range

35.000€ (pre-taxes). Net amount after taxes depends on total personal income and the family composition. A four-year tax exemption on 90 percent of the salary is available according to the Italian tax law for candidates who have been residing outside Italy for 3 years or more.

Research funding will be available depending on the researcher’s productivity and publication record.

Successful candidates will be notified by December 1, 2019.

Interviews will be conducted during the EEA Job Market Meeting (December 18-19, 2019) in Rotterdam , Netherlands

Short-listed candidates will be invited to give a seminar in Milano, in the period between late January and early March 2020.

The Department will identify the top candidate by mid-March 2020.

As required by the Italian law, the position will be publicly announced on the Italian official journal (Gazzetta Ufficiale) by mid-March 2020. The candidate will be invited to participate in the corresponding public competition (Concorso), which is expected to be completed within six months from its announcement.
