UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ

ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT

Assistant Professor, Development and Health Economics

The Economics Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a position in development and health economics at the Assistant Professor (tenure-track) level. The department has a preference for a candidate who does research at the intersection of development and health in a developing country setting; however, candidates in the health field at large are welcome to apply, especially those who focus on inequality and health disparities. Teaching areas might include introductory, intermediate and graduate classes in development economics and health economics, as well as other classes in the undergraduate curriculum. The candidate is expected to participate actively in the campus initiative in global and community health.

The Economics Department has a Ph.D. program, a professional Master’s program, and several undergraduate programs. Applicants will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students; contribute to graduate education, the research environment of the department, and to university and professional service.

Successful candidates must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. UC Santa Cruz is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a high proportion of first-in-family undergraduate students. We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing traditionally underrepresented groups in higher education, and who have engaged in teaching, research, professional and/or public service contributions that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. These can take a variety of forms such as, but not limited to, effective pedagogical strategies used for the educational advancement of students in underrepresented groups; demonstrated contributions to the advancement of access and equal opportunity in education; and participation in activities that support the recruitment, retention, and success of scholars and students.
