The Institute of Economics (IdEP) at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano, Switzerland, invites applications for one Postdoctoral research position in Labor Economics for up to 3 years. Shorter contracts may also be considered.

The successful candidate will conduct independent research while concurrently contributing to the Swiss National Research Programme (NRP) 80 project: “Impacts of Covid-19 and policy measures on trade, labor demand, and job finding”. Project leaders: Fabrizio Colella (USI) and Rafael Lalive (University of Lausanne).

The research project analyzes the impact of Covid-19 and related restrictions on international trade linkages of firms that are located in Switzerland, and how this trade shock percolates through the labor market. We build on several data sources: firm-level custom data to analyze firms’ trade flows, online job postings data to study labor demand, and job-seekers data for the analysis of labor supply.

Candidates are expected to hold (or be close to completing) a Ph.D. in Economics and to have excellent training in labor economics and applied econometrics. Experience with the analysis of trade, text, or administrative data is welcome but not required. Knowledge of Italian is not a requirement.

The Institute of Economics at USI offers an exciting research environment, competitive terms and conditions, and generous research support. The annual salary ranges from CHF 80,000 to 85,000 (USD 80,000 to 85,000).

The starting date is September 1, 2023, but an earlier or later date is also possible. The appointment is initially for up to 3 years but shorter contracts may also be considered. The position can potentially be extended by participating in competitive funding opportunities for whose application procedures USI provides support.

Please submit your electronic application including a motivation letter, your CV, your job market paper, up to two representative manuscripts (optional), and at least two letters of reference via EconJobMarket. The deadline to submit your application is January 31st, 2023, but we will start reviewing applications on December 1st, 2022.

Interviews will subsequently be conducted online and predominantly as part of the 5th European Job Market (EJM) on December 12-14, 2022 until the position is filled. Only those applicants whose profiles are likely to fit the position will be notified for further details and eventual interviews. USI is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity in all forms.
