Job description

The position is a two-year research position with a possibility of extension. The position is funded by KU Leuven under a grant on Climate Coalition Formation and International Trade and provides an excellent opportunity for long-term academic development.

Qualifications and Profile

We look for motivated candidates showing research skills through a pipeline of promising research projects, papers and academic references. The candidate should have either experience or interest of working in the field of Environmental Economics. The position requires a subset of the following expertise (in order of approximate priority): Environmental Economics, Economic Theory, Industrial Organisation, Trade and International Macroeconomics.

Interested candidates should hold (or obtain prior to the start date of employment) a Ph.D. in Economics or in a related field. Excellence in written and spoken English is also a prerequisite.

Duties:

The research component consists of collaborating on the project in the field of Environmental Economics, in a horizontal research environment.

We encourage independent research too and a proportion of the time of the qualified candidate will be allocated to independent research.

They also contribute to attracting research funding and is expected to supervise Master’s theses. The candidate will have minimum teaching and administrative responsibilities. The successful applicant will be expected to develop a high degree of interaction with the faculty, postdoctoral scholars and PhD students, and actively contribute to the life of the department.

We offer

  • A monthly net salary of €2,600 in position for a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar. This also covers social insurance benefits. The salary would be somewhat higher due to a tax exemption if the candidate spent less than 24 months in Belgium during three years prior to the starting date.
  • A research/travel allowance of €2,500 per year, a shared office and a computer allowance up to €1,000.
  • The appointment is initially for a period of two years. The extension for another year will be subject to an interim evaluation after 18 months and mutual agreement.
  • The successful candidate can benefit from a semester sabbatical in the second year for a research visit to a reputable international institution.
  • The Department of Economics offers an active and internationally oriented research environment, relying on communication in English.
  • The Faculty of Economics and Business has systematically been ranked highly by several independent accreditation committees. The FEB has recently acquired the renowned EQUIS accreditation and benefits from an extensive national and international network in academia and business.
  • KU Leuven is well set in international hires and will support the process of moving and settling in Belgium/Leuven.
