Position description

The Design Lab (http://designlab.ucsd.edu) and the Department of Economics (economics.ucsd.edu) at UC San Diego seek candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position to begin July 1, 2023.

The Design Lab at UC San Diego is an interdisciplinary, multi-departmental center, that collaborates with all departments and divisions of the University, including (but not restricted to) the School of Arts and Humanities, Jacobs School of Engineering, School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science, Rady School of Management, School of Medicine, and School of Social Sciences.

The Department of Economics within the School of Social Sciences at UC San Diego is committed to building an excellent and diverse faculty, staff, and student body, and invites applications from candidates whose experience has prepared them to contribute to our commitment. The Department is among the top 15 Economics PhD programs in the US, according to USNWR.

The Design Lab fosters research and practice that centers people and communities in designing interdisciplinary solutions to complex, socio-technical problems. In collaboration with the Department of Economics, we aim to hire a faculty member working at the intersection of economics and design. We especially seek scholars, working at the frontiers of design research and design education, who explore complex societal issues and thoughtfully engage at the intersections of race, ethnicity, Indigeneity, migration, gender, sexuality, disability, class and other manifestations of power and difference.

Some examples of topics that we would be interested in include:

-Automation and artificial intelligence in the labor market

-Causes and consequences of technological change in health care and education markets

-Geographical variation in opportunities that affect inequality

Candidates whose work is at the intersection of multiple research interests are encouraged to apply. This position requires teaching of university students and the successful applicant will be expected to establish a vigorous program of high-quality, funded research at the intersection of economics and design. Preferred candidates will have a demonstrated record of human-centered research; be able to demonstrate the potential for teaching excellence as they will be expected to supervise and teach graduate and undergraduate students in design- and economics-related courses; demonstrate the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity; and contribute to an institution that is deeply committed to justice, equity, inclusion, and diversity. Inter- or transdisciplinary perspectives, experience with multiple or mixed methodologies, and community-driven design is highly valued. Candidates with demonstrated experience with or willingness to engage in activities that contribute to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion at UC San Diego are especially encouraged to apply.
