About the Role The Melbourne Institute is seeking an experienced Senior Research Fellow to work on the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey Project. This position will be supervised by Professor Roger Wilkins, and will work with both Professor Wilkins and Associate Professor Nicole Watson, the Co-Directors of the HILDA Survey Project. The Senior Research Fellow undertake a variety of activities while working on the Project including production of reports, development of questionnaire content, contributing to production of the dataset and conducting ‘on-demand’ analysis for external clients. The Senior Research Fellow is expected to undertake independent academic research, with a particular emphasis on applied research drawing on the HILDA Survey data and other household panel datasets.

Specific duties will include:

Ø Work on the HILDA Survey Project

- Analysing the HILDA Survey data and preparing the annual statistical report, under the direction of and in collaboration with Professor Wilkins.

- Prepare the annual respondent report, a short engaging summary of key results from the HILDA Survey distributed to respondents.

- Questionnaire design of modules or enhancement of existing modules.

- Development of derived variables for inclusion in the HILDA Survey datasets.

- Oversight of enquiries and associated data analysis.

- Active participation in meetings associated with the HILDA Survey Project.

Ø Other activities as a member of academic staff of the Melbourne Institute

- Supervise junior research staff involved in the staff member’s work.

- Conduct research either as a member of a team or independently, and producing papers published in high-impact refereed academic journals.

- Involvement in dissemination / communication activities, including presentations at conferences and seminars, preparing policy and news briefs, and interacting with the media.

- Serve on department, faculty or university committees as required

- Attend departmental meetings

The position is being offered on a continuing (tenure-track) basis contingent upon research funding. Confirmation of continuing status (granting of tenure) is to occur within five years of initial appointment.

About You You will hold a PhD, along with relevant experience and strong skills in applied statistics, especially in relation to the analysis of longitudinal survey data. You will possess strong written and verbal communication skills, and be able to effectively relay complex information to non-academic audiences. To be successful, you will need an interest in public policy and longitudinal data analysis.
