Requirements

Those in the academic tenure track system are expected to carry out and supervise scientific research, to provide high quality academic education, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, to the academic community and to the society at large. Applicants should hold a doctoral degree (or be near completion of the doctorate) in economics or in a related field. The applicants will be reviewed based on their research, teaching and activity in the scientific community.

What we offer

At the assistant professor level, the tenure track covers two terms. The first term is for five years, with renewal for a second four-year term being based on a successful mid-term evaluation. Subsequent promotion to permanent Associate Professor position is based on a successful tenure review, conducted towards the end of the second term of the assistant professorship. The selected candidate may start either at first or second term, depending on their current career stage.

Our salaries are competitive within the European context. A yearly research funding is offered for the first three years of the tenure track. The School of Business will also provide relocation support for tenure track professors coming from outside of Finland. Consistent with EU insurance and pension regulations, Aalto expects full-time academic employees to reside and work in Finland. In addition, Aalto University provides its employees with occupational health care services and retirement benefits.

The Department of Economics at Aalto University invites applications for two postdoctoral fellowships starting in September 2026. The positions are in the economics of education, broadly defined. The duration of the fellowships is three years, with the possibility of extension to a fourth year. Applicants should hold a doctoral degree (or be near completion of the doctorate) in economics or a related field. Candidates will be evaluated based on their research achievements and engagement in the scientific community.

The positions are part of the Research Council of Finland’s flagship program Education for the Future (EDUCA). The program builds on ongoing large-scale randomized controlled trials and new infrastructure for conducting extensive assessments and surveys in schools, linked with rich administrative data. The fellows will join a vibrant community of researchers in Helsinki and beyond working on education and labor economics. We offer access to exceptional research networks and data, the opportunity to use our infrastructure for suitable new projects, and a competitive salary with a generous research budget. The fellows are given time and support to develop their own research agendas. In return, we expect them to be active members of the economics of education research group and the broader academic community, to participate in graduate student supervision, and to contribute to teaching by offering one six-week course per year or an equivalent combination of lectures, seminars, and supervision.
