Department of Economics

Department of Economics is part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, has grown from a four-member Political Economy Group in 1966 to a vibrant team of 58 academics. Role

Besides contributions to the department’s excellent education and impactful research, the role involves providing leadership to one of the department’s research groups. Some colleagues contribute to multiple research groups as well as to various Centres and Institutes within the University, including the Centre for Development Studies, Centre for 21st Century Public Health, Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change, Centre for Climate Adaptation and Environment Research, and the Institute for Policy Research. The position offers access to a wide pool of researchers and engagement with external partnerships, policy bodies, and research organizations, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and impact.

About You

You will be expected to demonstrate:

  • A sustained record of publications in internationally leading Economics journals (general interest as well as top field journals) together with evidence of impact through research funding and/or contracts.
  • Evidence of research leadership at both national and international levels.
  • The ability to provide leadership to one of our research groups.
  • A proven record of excellence in teaching and PhD supervision, including innovative teaching methods.

Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU), located in Wenzhou, China, one of three Sino-American universities along with NYU Shanghai and Duke Kunshan University, is approved by the Ministry of Education of China. Launched in 2012, WKU offers a unique model of higher education in partnership with Kean University, a comprehensive, public university in the state of New Jersey that is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The College of Business and Public Management is an AACSB-accredited business school. Wenzhou is one of the most vibrant and economically advanced developed cities on China’s East Coast, located one hour by plane and three hours by high-speed train from Shanghai.

WKU sits on approximately 500 beautiful acres and currently enrolls about 5,200 students, and it is now in the midst of a rapid growth that will bring enrollment to 8,500 students within the next five years. All instruction is in English and all curriculum is provided by Kean University.

In addition to its current 18 undergraduate programs, WKU has been approved by the Ministry of Education for offering 8 Master’s and 3 doctorate programs. Position information:

We invite applicants for full-time positions of tenure-track, 10-month, Assistant/Associate Professor in Finance to begin in Fall 2026 (August 16). Research-oriented applicants with demonstrated high quality teaching are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in Finance or a closely related field from a recognized research university, with preference given to Carnegie R1/AACSB/EQUIS institutions. Applicants with terminal economics degrees from top universities and proven research records in finance are also encouraged to apply. The candidate must demonstrate a high-quality research record or clear potential to publish in high quality, peer-reviewed, international journals in finance and relevant fields. Applicants for Associate Professor rank are expected to demonstrate a strong track record in research, outstanding teaching accomplishments, and leadership in the finance field. The Lecturer will also contribute to the design and development of teaching materials for various programs aligned with the mission of IFDM, covering personal finance, household finance, and financial education. The position is for a 1-year fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. A PhD in Economics, Finance, or a related discipline is required. The Initiative for Financial Decision-Making (IFDM) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships under the supervision of Professor Annamaria Lusardi, the Initiative’s faculty director. The in-person fellowship begins in summer 2026 (no later than September 1, 2026), runs for one year, and may be renewed assuming performance at or above expectations; a two-year term is strongly preferred.

The fellowship centers on empirical research related to financial literacy and financial decision-making. IFDM builds on more than a decade of research by the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center (GFLEC), founded by Professor Lusardi, which has developed widely used tools to measure financial literacy, advanced the field’s research agenda, and shaped financial education programs in the U.S. and globally. IFDM’s cutting-edge research program applies data, economic theory, and analytics to understand what drives household financial literacy and money management. Planned projects include analyses of: (i) financial fragility trends among U.S. adults over the past twelve years; (ii) risk comprehension and its effects on investor behavior; (iii) how financial literacy influences household financial outcomes; and (iv) the impact of educational interventions on financial knowledge and behavior.

Postdoctoral fellows are expected to produce academic research from the Initiative’s agenda and will work closely and directly with all members of the Initiative, including the director, co-authors of academic papers, PhD students, and other postdoctoral fellows. This is a dedicated research community with plenty of interaction and the expectation of both working collaboratively in smaller groups but also independently on projects. Progress on the research is required to be presented regularly to a broader group of stakeholders of the Initiative. The fellow is expected to be actively involved in the Initiative’s intellectual community by participating in meetings, research lunches/colloquia, and potentially joint projects. The fellow is also encouraged to integrate with the broader research community at Stanford by attending seminars and other events.

The primary selection criterion is research excellence in household/personal finance or applied economics and a clear interest in contributing to the Initiative’s research. The position requires someone with a strong background in the field, i.e. a PhD in Economics or Finance. A focus on household finance or program evaluation is preferred.

The Annenberg Institute at Brown University (AIB) is seeking a postdoctoral research associate for a one-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, to join a diverse community of scholars committed to educational equity and improvement. The postdoctoral research associate will participate in collaborative research activities with at least one of our affiliated faculty on issues related to US PK-16 education policy.

Applicants should have a substantive interest in PK-16 education and deep expertise with quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed methods research.

We are particularly interested in scholars with expertise in:

  • school choice in large urban school districts (to work with Jesse Bruhn);
  • race and education (to work with John Diamond and/or Prudence Carter);
  • state and district-level research practice partnerships, particularly related to teacher workforce development and/or professional learning (to work with John Papay and Nate Schwartz).

The postdoctoral research associate will receive mentorship and training from a faculty sponsor, primarily through an active research apprenticeship and collaboration. In addition, they will be part of our robust postdoctoral cohort, and the broader AIB community including faculty, research staff, and students at Brown University.

Selected candidates who have not completed all requirements for their doctoral degree by the position start date will be appointed as a Research Associate at a reduced salary until all degree requirements are completed.

Qualifications

Summary

GiveWell is seeking exceptional Senior Research Associates to help direct hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the most cost-effective global health and poverty alleviation programs. You’ll have an outsized influence on our funding decisions and help us save and improve lives on a global scale.

You’ll execute ambitious research agendas, answer complex questions, and inform high-impact grantmaking decisions by combining rigorous evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, and thoughtful judgment.

The role

You’ll join a small grantmaking team to execute ambitious research agendas, sifting through the countless questions we could try to answer and honing in on those that matter most. Your decisions will inform the allocation of hundreds of millions of dollars to dozens of grantees.

Your practical work will combine empirical evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, discussions with subject matter experts, and developing your own judgment. In the course of your work, you might approach questions like these:

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing interventions (e.g., vaccine demand generation, vitamin A supplementation, seasonal malaria chemoprevention) at various levels of depth to refine our view about the cost-effectiveness of a particular intervention and recommend either deprioritization or further work. Researchers review existing empirical evidence about intervention impacts, build models, speak with subject matter experts about particular interventions, and use their judgment to come up with a bottom line. Examples of this work are available on our intervention reports page.
  • Building cost-effectiveness models to estimate the costs and benefits of a particular intervention. These models take into account a wide variety of considerations, including: one's prior estimate for an intervention's impact, the strength of the evidence, the size of the effects, the similarity between the context in which an intervention was studied and will be implemented, negative and/or offsetting effects, and how funding this intervention would affect decisions by other actors (e.g., local government, donor governments).   • Reviewing specific grantmaking opportunities. We receive and solicit requests for funding on an ongoing basis. Researchers investigate each of these opportunities to determine whether or not they should receive funding. Reviewers discuss each grant opportunity with the applying organization, consider its plans and assess the likelihood it will achieve them, estimate the cost-effectiveness of a grant and forecast its likelihood of success. When necessary, they solicit feedback from outside experts (e.g., academics, government officials) about the opportunity.
  • Tackle thorny research questions with creative approaches. We often need to answer questions that don’t have clear answers in published academic journals or other data sources (see some examples above), but which nevertheless matter significantly to our bottom-line funding decisions. You’ll come up with creative approaches to answer these questions, and your work will often influence the funding decisions of many of GiveWell’s research subteams.
  • Building relationships with experts relevant to our work, for example, academics who specialize in interventions we are reviewing (e.g., malaria, malnutrition treatment, in-line water chlorination), leaders and program staff at organizations we are considering for funding, and program staff at foundations who are also evaluating where to allocate funds.
  • Publishing reports and blog posts on our website. Transparency is a core value of ours and we aim to publish as much supporting information regarding our conclusions as we can. Researchers write up our findings and reasoning for publication on our website or summarize key points from their work in blog posts.

What is career development like?

After gaining experience on the team, Senior Research Associates have the opportunity to develop into Senior Researchers, who lead the development of our research agendas. Senior Researchers may then pursue a few pathways for career development based on their preferences and GiveWell’s needs. Some choose to develop wider and more autonomous research agendas as individual contributors, while others take on people management responsibilities. Another potential pathway is to transition into a Program Officer position, in which you’d own a high-impact, cost-effective grantmaking portfolios by deepening your expertise, growing your networks, and understanding the broader context within a specific grantmaking area. Program Officers think through questions like:

  • How should we balance exploring and seeding new, smaller opportunities with funding cost-effective opportunities at scale today?
  • How can we triangulate empirical evidence against expert opinion on other qualitative features, like organizational track record?
  • What is research we can fund today that could substantially impact our grantmaking five years from now?
  • How much uncertainty are we willing to accept before making a grant? What key research questions do we need to answer before making a grant, and which ones can we deprioritize or answer later?

Team structure

Our research department has over 50 people, and is currently organized into eight teams:

  • Five of the teams (Water, Livelihoods, Nutrition, Malaria, and Vaccines) focus on specific areas of grantmaking.
  • The New Areas team focuses on interventions in domains that are new to GiveWell.
  • The Cross-Cutting team focuses on methodological issues, research quality, and other big-picture concerns that cut across all of our research work.
  • The Commons team provides generalized research support to each of the other teams, including landscaping research, vetting, and publishing.

In most cases, we hire Senior Research Associates without knowing which subteam they’ll eventually sit on. We aim to expose new researchers to different types of work and parts of the team over several months to inform their eventual subteam placement. (We might settle on a subteam more quickly if new hires bring specific, specialized expertise.)

Our researchers assist in communicating our research findings to the public and our donors, and on occasion we provide tailored advice to ultra-high-net-worth donors who want to rely on our expertise to direct their giving—but we never ask our researchers to trade off against honesty, or to hide their real beliefs.
  • We don’t waste time. Once it’s clear that a particular research question is unlikely to change our bottom-line funding recommendation, we drop it as quickly as possible. We encourage our research staff to constantly re-evaluate their portfolios and only work on the highest-priority questions.
  • Lean research team = huge personal impact. Our research team of just over 50 people directs hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
  • We work well together. Our research team is lean because we’re able to attract top-tier people, all of whom complete skills-based assessments before joining our staff. We maintain a high-performing, collegial culture and pay our staff accordingly.

About you

You should be graduating with a doctoral degree in a quantitative field like economics, mathematics, or statistics. The practical work of this role is probably most aligned with the applied microeconomics subfield (think development, health, labor, or similar), but we also have successful team members from theoretical and behavioral econ backgrounds, and we’re open to applicants from all subfields.

2. The candidate’s profile

As a lecturer, you are part of the Applied Economics Section of the Utrecht University School of Economics. We offer courses within the broad Bachelor’s programme Economics & Business Economics, a double Bachelor’s programme in Economics and Mathematics, and several specialised Master’s programmes. Examples of courses you can be involved in are Economics of the Public Sector, Welfare Economics, Applied Economics, and Empirical Economics. Your qualities

  • A PhD degree in Economics, Econometrics or a related discipline (candidates who have submitted their manuscript and are awaiting their defence date are invited to apply);
  • relevant knowledge of teaching in Public Economics, Applied Data Science, Econometrics or statistical methods in economics;
  • teaching experience in an international academic environment with the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to graduate levels, apparent from positive assessments by students and peers;

About the Role

The Department of Economics at City St George’s, University of London is seeking to make five appointments of Lecturer (Grade 6/7):

LLUI Wealth is committed to advancing high-impact research that meets the rigorous standards of top-tier academic journals in economics and finance. As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you will join LLUI’s Department of Wealth Creation and work under the supervision of four affiliated faculty members: Michael Weber, Francesco D’Acunto, Andreas Neuhierl, and Alberto Rossi, who are leading empirical researchers specializing in asset pricing, investments, and behavioral finance. The Advanced Research and Knowledge Management (ARKM) division leads a data and analytics program that supports data-driven, evidence-based, policy, operational, and business decisions. ARKM also leads the development of an education and training program that is unique to the ASC, focused on the skills and knowledge needed in a securities regulatory environment. It also serves as an expert internal resource for updates, research, and analysis on existing, increasing and emerging risks that require regulatory responses, and considers the impact of innovation in capital markets through technology testing.

The opportunity:

Reporting to the Director, ARKM, this newly created Senior Economist role will lead in developing high-quality empirical insights and data-driven analysis that support the ASC’s external publications, policy work, and internal decision-making. Centre for Effective Governance of Indian States (CEGIS – pronounced See-Jis) aims to improve lives by helping Indian state governments deliver better development outcomes. Position Summary: Economist/Sr. Economist

As the demand for CEGIS’s offerings is growing, we aim to hire multiple Economists to join the “Economics and Statistics Unit” (ESU) at CEGIS to conduct economic analysis focused on state-level policy issues in India. In this pivotal role, you will be at the forefront of driving analytical work and conducting impactful research on policies and programmes that can boost the effectiveness of thousands of crores of public spending, and thereby improve the translation of public expenditure into development outcomes for millions of people.

You will work closely with a diverse team of analysts and economists in close collaboration with senior government officials and with technical guidance and inputs from Prof. Karthik Muralidharan (and other faculty members as appropriate).

As a CEGIS Economist, key responsibilities will include (but not be limited to): (a) conducting original research and technical analysis to evaluate new proposed expenditure items - we are interested in both causal inference and predictive analytics; (b) conducting economic analysis of government policies and programs and evaluating key programs; (c) staying abreast of and summarizing relevant research for answering policy questions; (d) knowing and understanding major datasets on the Indian economy, and helping to merge and manage these datasets to enable rapid policy-relevant analysis, (e) identifying and liaising with academic and other researchers to obtain expert inputs into policy decisions, and (f) mentoring and coaching teams of analysts with undergraduate and master’s degrees. Role and Responsibilities

1. Economic Research and Technical Analysis

  • Conduct comprehensive economic research and analysis on various policy and programmatic issues relevant to state governments.
  • Review and synthesize research literature to inform policy and intervention design
  • Develop data-driven insights and recommendations to support effective policy implementation and governance reforms.
  • Provide technical leadership and inputs to CEGIS field projects, including sampling design, data analytical frameworks, and analytical tools.
  • Coordinate internal reviews, offer substantive advice on economic rationale and quality of economic analysis in CEGIS’s strategies, programs, and projects.
  • Curate and update datasets (international, national, and state) for rapid analysis.

2. Policy Development and Collaboration

  • Engage with senior government officials to identify research, analysis, and knowledge gaps that can be filled by CEGIS
  • Engage with a range of stakeholders, including government officials, researchers, and think-tanks, to foster effective policy dialogues and knowledge sharing across Indian states, and beyond.
  • Support CEGIS teams and projects in developing and implementing evidence-based policy solutions, providing critical economic insights and analyses.
  • Translate economic research findings into practical policy ideas and reforms that can be presented to state governments for consideration.

3. Knowledge Creation and Dissemination

  • Draft high-quality notes, reports, policy briefs, and academic papers, applying economic concepts and analytical methods effectively.
  • Create and present accessible content to communicate complex economic findings and insights to both academic and non-academic audiences.
  • Serve as a liaison between CEGIS projects and external academic and technical experts, ensuring the relevance and rigor of economic analysis.
  • Contribute to and oversee the production, quality control, and dissemination of diverse knowledge outputs, including academic publications.
  • Engage with media, public forums, and academic conferences to promote discourse on key economic issues and share CEGIS’s research contributions.

Education & Skills

  • Ph.D. in Economics, Public Policy, Applied Statistics/Data Science, or a related field is strongly preferred (‘Ph.D and 0-6 years’ experience will be considered for an Economist position, and 6-12 years would be evaluated for a Sr Economist position)
  • Proficiency in data science methods such as predictive modeling (building, comparing, and tuning predictive models; cross-validation and out of sample evaluations; updating models over time); management and manipulation of large scale datasets; and some CEGIS domain-specific ML skills (small-area estimation and forecasting; risk scoring and early warning systems will be greatly valued
  • Familiarity with major research datasets covering India and experience in compiling and using complex datasets.
  • Strong writing and communication skills in English; fluency in other Indian languages, especially Hindi, is a plus.

Experience

  • Applied research and policy at any level, with a focus on public finance, budget analysis, and program-level analysis.
  • Cutting edge data analytics for decision making; conducting rapid A/B tests with iterative experimental designs will be a plus
  • Writing high-quality policy briefs, research papers, and notes.
  • Exposure to project design and implementation, particularly in collaboration with government officials or large-scale projects, is advantageous.

The postdoctoral scholar will work together with Professors Per Strömberg and Gustav Martinsson and Associate Professor Christian Thomann on projects related to climate policy and corporate behavior, using large firm-level datasets on emissions, taxes and financial outcomes. The research builds on an existing data infrastructure and ongoing collaborations with Sveriges Riksbank and government agencies. The objective is to coauthor high-quality journal articles (top general-interest or top field journals). The postdoctoral scholar will also have time for their own projects. There is no teaching associated with the position. We welcome empirically oriented candidates in corporate finance, climate / environmental / energy economics, and applied micro, as well as strong candidates in theory, trade or macro with a clear interest in climate policy and corporate finance. The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Concordia University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Empirical Urban Economics of Transportation Electrification, an area aligned with the Volt-Age electrification research program. Duties include research, teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and service to the institution. The ideal candidate will conduct empirical research on the economics of transportation electrification, with particular interest in policy-relevant impacts on housing markets, land use, travel behaviour, equity, and/or decarbonization outcomes. Using causal identification strategies, the research is expected to examine how electrification investments interact with behavioural responses, incentives, and/or economic conditions to inform effective, equitable, and sustainable policy design.

Candidates must have completed their PhD in Economics or be near completion at the start date of the appointment. The main criteria for selection are scholarly and teaching excellence. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent potential in empirical economics, with strong skills in causal inference and applied econometric methods. Priority will be given to candidates whose current research examines the economic impacts of transportation electrification, including, for instance, electric vehicle adoption, EV charging infrastructure, urban and regional outcomes, travel behaviour, housing and land-use markets, and other related policy or equity issues. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high-quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer assessed publications and the securing of external research funding, as well as strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions and course development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Job Description:

The research fellows will participate in the Department of Economics new Research Program in Regulation and Competition Policy (“RPCR”). The RPCR’s goal is to provide critical assessment of the practice and policy of competition law and regulation in Canada through the lens of economics. The research fellows will be expected to research and provide commentary on regulatory decisions, competition law cases and enforcement actions, regulatory and competition policy issues more generally, and relevant policy or legislative consultations. Besides producing research commentaries and briefs, the research fellows will contribute to, develop, and define relevant focus areas. The RPCR is new: we have a goal and welcome you to bring you energy, enthusiasm, and talents to enhance the contribution regulation and antitrust can make to the lives of Canadians. The research fellows will be supervised by the Co-Directors of the RPCR, Dr. Aidan Hollis and Dr. Jeffrey Church. It is expected that they will have the opportunity to contribute to research in industrial organization in collaboration with the Department’s many other scholars working in this field.

Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant Assistant Professorship in Energy Economics (fixed-term) at the Department of Economics

The Department of Economics provides research, teaching and knowledge transfer within the core areas of economics, i.e. microeconomics, macroeconomics, and quantitative methods. The Department is especially active in business-related, applied economic research, and comprises two research centres: Copenhagen School of Energy Infrastructure (CSEI) and Pension Research Centre (PeRCent). In terms of research activities, the post will be attached to CSEI.

The position includes both research and teaching obligations. The candidate will be expected to be physically present on campus on a regular basis and actively participate in the research activities of CSEI.

Research focus and responsibilities

The appointed Assistant Professor is expected to strengthen and contribute to the development, external funding, and promotion of research areas of CSEI. Much of our research is focused on European energy issues, while we also have a global research outlook – the applicant should be familiar with the European energy policy landscape and in particular with regard to grid infrastructure and regulation.
The research priorities and strategy of CSEI are decided by the Director of the centre. The focus areas of our research include, but are not limited to, the following areas of applied energy economics, regulation, and policy research:

The assistant professorship is a fixed term position for 4 years with research and teaching obligations.

  1. A statement of application.
  2. Proof of qualifications and a full CV.
  3. Documentation of relevant, significant, original research at an international level, including publications in the field’s internationally recognized journals and citations in the Social Science Citation Index and/or Google Scholar.
  4. A teaching portfolio documenting teaching qualifications and pedagogical development. The portfolio must include an overview of the applicants past teaching achievements and practice and its impact on the students, reflections on pedagogical competencies and core strengths, the educational competencies the applicant would like to develop, and the teaching opportu-nities they would like to pursue in the nearest future.   5. Information indicating experience in research management, industry co-operation and international co-operation.
  6. A complete, numbered list of publications (indicating titles, co-authors, page numbers and year) with an * marking of the academic productions to be considered during the review. A maximum of 10 publications for review are allowed. Applicants are requested to prioritise their publications in relation to the field of this job advertisement.
  7. Copies of the publications marked with an *. Only publications written in English (or another specified principal language, according to research tradition) or one of the Scandinavian languages will be taken into consideration.

Recruitment procedure

The Recruitment Committee will shortlist minimum two applicants; when possible five or more applicants will be shortlisted. The shortlisted applicants will be assessed by the Assessment Committee. All applicants will be notified of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline.

The applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Assessment Committee and later in the process about the result of the assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their application.

In this context, and as part of our strategic research priorities, we are seeking to appoint an outstanding research-focused academic as an Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer in Digital Innovation and Transformation. As we implement our ambitious strategy, there is now a unique opportunity for an outstanding researcher to lead amongst passionate colleagues – from diverse disciplines but with like minds and a shared purpose – as we establish and build out a hub of research excellence under the School’s Innovation theme. The appointee could have a background in one or more of the following Business School disciplines relevant to ‘digital innovation and transformation’: Business Information Systems; Strategy, Innovation & Entrepreneurship; Business Analytics; or Marketing. The appointee will advance research on digital innovation and transformation that is of strategic importance to the Business School as well as our community, government and industry partners. Bringing a strong record of impactful research outputs and funding success as well as experience in external engagement, the successful candidate will demonstrate intellectual leadership to build and guide a research program that leverages the collective talents of Business School colleagues in ways that deliver academic and societal impact.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a continuing position, subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period and confirmation period with agreed performance. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
