The Department of Economics of the Central European University (CEU) invites applications for the position of a Postdoctoral Researcher for the duration of two years (extension may be possible).
We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to join our project on “Social Responsibility in Markets and Beyond.” In this project, we will combine behavioral economic theory, experiments, and survey data to study the potential role of socially responsible individuals in markets as well as in collective decisions more generally. We will theoretically investigate the impact of individuals on socially relevant equilibrium outcomes – such as externalities – different types of socially responsible preferences, and how both of these affect individual actions; and we will explore empirically via surveys and experiments what impact individuals believe they have, what determines these beliefs, and identify individuals’ moral preferences or views, and measure how these affect their actual behaviors.
The positions will be based at the Department of Economics at Central European University for the duration of two years. The position will start August 1, 2026 or possibly earlier. The Principal Investigator for this project is Marc Kaufmann. On the theory side, the work is joint with Botond Kőszegi, while the empirical work partially overlaps with other researchers studying (mis)beliefs in economics, including Maite Deambrosi, Christoph Drobner, and Adam Szeidl.
Qualifications
• Completed or are close to obtaining a PhD in economics or a related field.
• Expertise and research background in either behavioral economic theory or experimental economics including lab, field, or online experiments.

• Evidence of the capacity to prepare excellent publications.
• Commitment to high quality research.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
• Effective written and verbal communication and time management skills.
• Fluency in English.
What to expect
• You will conduct innovative and high-quality research on social responsibility broadly defined and (mis)beliefs in social questions.
• You will have a central role in all aspects of the research process, from model building and/or experiments to the drafting and publishing of academic papers.
• You will be part of a department that regularly delivers high-impact research published in top international academic journals.

• You are encouraged to contribute to the overall activities of the Department and attend seminars.

We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to join our project on “Forecasting with Feedback.” In this project, we will combine applied economic theory, macroeconomic modeling, and econometric techniques to study the properties of forecasts that are subject to feedback. The case in point is inflation forecasts produced by a central bank, which play a dual role. They are meant to provide an accurate prediction of realized inflation over some horizon but, at the same time, they also serve as an input for setting monetary policy. Feedback occurs because monetary policy affects future inflation --- the outcome that the forecast is meant to predict. Our existing work on this problem is summarized by this research paper. In future research we plan to i) extend this model in various directions so that it can be taken to the data in a more disciplined and realistic way; ii) relate the implications of the model to the literature on monetary policy regime changes in the U.S.; iii) collect data from various other central banks around the world to test the observable implications of the model more generally.
The position will be based at the Department of Economics at Central European University for the duration of two years. The position will start August 1, 2026. The Principal Investigator for this project is Robert Lieli. The work is joint with Augusto Nieto Barthaburu (Universidad Nacional de Tucuman) while Katrin Rabitsch (Vienna University of Economics and Business) provides advice on macroeconomic modeling.
Qualifications
• PhD in economics or a related field, or close to completion.

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
• Effective written and verbal communication and time management skills.
• Fluency in English.
What to expect
• You will conduct innovative and high-quality research on forecasting processes subject to feedback, particularly inflation forecasting in central banks.
• You will have a central role in all aspects of the research process, from model building, data collection and analysis to the drafting and publishing of academic papers.
• You will be part of a department that regularly delivers high-impact research published in top international academic journals.

Other Desired Expertise:
Additional expertise in domains where AI can drive broader economic and societal impact will be considered a plus. These include the application of AI and machine learning to foster innovation and R&D productivity, address climate change through sustainable technologies and environmental economics, and promote poverty reduction and economic inclusion by improving access to jobs, education, and financial services. Research that explores policy and regulatory challenges associated with these transformations—such as fairness, bias, and labor rights—will be particularly welcome.

The TRIUM Global Executive MBA was ranked #5 globally while Executive Education remained one of the top players in Europe, continuing to hold the #2 global position in open programs—all by the Financial Times. These are just a few examples of the many HEC Paris programs that have received top international recognition. HEC Paris has one of the largest campuses in Europe. It is located on the Paris-Saclay plateau hosting one of the world’s largest research-education-technology hubs.

Our work is funded by thousands of donors who rely on our research to inform their giving. We’ve grown from directing $1.5 million in 2010 to directing ~$400 million in 2024.
GiveWell is seeking exceptional Senior Research Associates to help direct hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the most cost-effective global health and poverty alleviation programs. You’ll have an outsized influence on our funding decisions and help us save and improve lives on a global scale.
You’ll execute ambitious research agendas, answer complex questions, and inform high-impact grantmaking decisions by combining rigorous evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, and thoughtful judgment.
Senior Research Associates will have the opportunity to develop into Senior Researcher or Program Officer roles, leading research agendas or owning complex grantmaking portfolios. We’re open to a wide variety of professional development options depending on your preferences and our needs.
This job listing is currently only open to economics PhD students on the job market. If you’re curious about how this job might look different from other opportunities you’re considering on the job market, check out this short doc written by Alex Cohen (Principal Researcher; cross-cutting team lead).
You’ll join a small grantmaking team to execute ambitious research agendas, sifting through the countless questions we could try to answer and honing in on those that matter most. Your decisions will inform the allocation of hundreds of millions of dollars to dozens of grantees.
Your practical work will combine empirical evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, discussions with subject matter experts, and developing your own judgment. In the course of your work, you might approach questions like these:
Responsibilities include:
After gaining experience on the team, Senior Research Associates have the opportunity to develop into Senior Researchers, who lead the development of our research agendas. Senior Researchers may then pursue a few pathways for career development based on their preferences and GiveWell’s needs. Some choose to develop wider and more autonomous research agendas as individual contributors, while others take on people management responsibilities. Another potential pathway is to transition into a Program Officer position, in which you’d own a high-impact, cost-effective grantmaking portfolios by deepening your expertise, growing your networks, and understanding the broader context within a specific grantmaking area. Program Officers think through questions like:
Our research department has over 50 people, and is currently organized into eight teams:
In most cases, we hire Senior Research Associates without knowing which subteam they’ll eventually sit on. We aim to expose new researchers to different types of work and parts of the team over several months to inform their eventual subteam placement. (We might settle on a subteam more quickly if new hires bring specific, specialized expertise.)
We think our research team has unique qualities:
You should be graduating with a doctoral degree in a quantitative field like economics, mathematics, or statistics. The practical work of this role is probably most aligned with the applied microeconomics subfield (think development, health, labor, or similar), but we also have successful team members from theoretical and behavioral econ backgrounds, and we’re open to applicants from all subfields.
We expect you will be characterized by many of the below qualities. We encourage you to apply if you would use the majority of these characteristics to describe yourself:
GiveWell makes grants to support cost-effective programs that save and improve lives. We focus on global health and poverty alleviation in the lowest-income parts of the world because that is where we’ve found we can have the greatest impact.
Since 2007, we’ve directed over $2.6 billion to cost-effective programs and interventions. In the last two years, we’ve directed more than $500 million to cost-effective programs. GiveWell is one of the world’s largest private funders of global development efforts, and we estimate that the funding we’ve directed will save more than 340,000 lives.
GiveWell is most well-known for recommending a small number of Top Charities, which currently support seasonal malaria chemoprevention, antimalarial nets, vaccine incentivization, and vitamin A supplementation. However, most of our research capacity is devoted to finding cost-effective opportunities outside of those programs.
Recent grants have:
We never take for granted that GiveWell’s work is good for the world. We make our reasoning public and transparent so others can challenge it (sometimes we even pay people to point out our errors). We go to unusual lengths to check our assumptions and assess our impact, including funding research and external analysis to address our uncertainties and insisting that our grantees conduct rigorous monitoring and evaluation. We change our minds when the evidence demands it.
We don’t want to miss candidates that could do great things at GiveWell. Practically, that means a GiveWell staff member reviews every application carefully, considering the whole picture of your background and potential. If you’re on the fence about applying because you meet some but not 100% of our preferred qualifications (some studies suggest this hesitation is especially common for women and people of color), we encourage you to apply anyway.
GiveWell is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer by choice. At minimum, this means that we comply with all federal, state, and local EEO and employment laws. Beyond the requirements of those laws, we value our team’s diversity in all respects, and we desire to maintain a work environment free of harassment or discrimination—we want our team members to thrive at GiveWell. If you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, contact us at careers@givewell.org. We will consider employment for qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.

Grade 8: £49,119 - £58,265 annum (with a discretionary range to £63,489 annum)
The Department of Economics is seeking to employ a Teaching Fellow (Departmental Lecturer-TF/DL) in Economics. The post is tenable for three years, and the successful candidate must be available to start no later than the autumn of 2026, as the role is currently vacant.
The principal task of the Departmental Lecturer will be to work with academic colleagues in the Department of Economics and with professional colleagues within the Saïd Business School to develop teaching materials for the MSc in Applied Financial Economics (MAFE) course. The MAFE is a new hybrid (part on-line, part in-person) degree which is due to take its first cohort of students in 26-27. Much of the academic content, which covers topics in micro, macro and financial econometrics, already exists and is currently being taught on the highly successful MSc in Financial Economics (MFE). However, the content of the MFE, which has been developed for in-person teaching, needs to be adapted to the requirements of high-quality on-line learning. It is this adaptation which will form the bulk of the postholder’s responsibility in the first two years in the post. Afterwards, the postholder will be expected to continuously maintain and review the materials for the MAFE and will also be required to deliver lectures and supervision at other programmes within the Economics Department.
The teaching and supervision load will be 336 ‘stint points’, which is the unit in which teaching and supervision contributions are measured. The total amount of teaching and supervision must not normally exceed this without the approval of the Head of Department.

To apply for this position, log in and choose your Applicant role (or, if you have no account, create one). This position uniquely bridges academic research and policy‑making within a central bank. The successful candidate will have access to confidential, high‑quality granular data, collaborate with a community of over 100 PhD economists, and work from a dedicated desk at the Bank of Canada’s Ottawa headquarters. The role also offers strong visibility for research outputs and opportunities to present at internal seminars and external conferences.
Desired post-doc profile
· Interested in systemic risks, applied econometrics, empirical work, agent-based modelling, financial stability, macroprudential policies, banking, non-bank financial institutions
· Interested in modelling and research opportunities in a central bank who can benefit from access to confidential Canadian granular data in their research
· Willing to develop their experience bringing research to the applied policy world
· Eager to learn about central banks modelling toolkit in systemic risks
What expectations?
· Spend about half of their time on completing their own research
· Spend the other half on guided modelling and applied research with Bank of Canada PhD economists aimed at an academic publication with an applied policy companion paper
· Teach at least one class (36 hours/12 weeks) at uOttawa to be determined given the candidate’s expertise.
Possible applied project at the Bank of Canada, depending on the profile of the candidate
1. Develop the modelling of non-bank financial institutions (e.g. pension funds, insurance sector…) to be integrated into the Bank’s system-wide risk simulation toolkit
Incorporating non‑bank financial institutions into a system‑wide stress‑testing framework, alongside vulnerabilities such as liquidity, firesales, redemption, and counterparty risks across banks, households, pension funds, and insurers, would improve identification of when the Canadian financial system could generate spillovers and inform policies to mitigate those risks. Although pension funds and insurers are typically viewed as financial stabilizers due to their long‑term funding and risk‑pooling roles, they can become sources of amplification depending on their interconnectedness with other financial institutions
2. Expand the scenarios simulation model to improve reverse stress-testing capabilities
Reverse stress testing identifies the shocks, macro‑financial scenarios, and contagion channels that could generate system‑wide stress severe enough to damage the real economy. Unlike traditional stress testing, which evaluates resilience to a given scenario, it focuses on the conditions that would cause failures in the financial system. Machine‑learning methods could help identify the most harmful scenarios for the financial system.
3. Integrate a network contagion modelling into the Bank’s system-wide risk simulation toolkit
Interconnections can propagate risks throughout the financial system. For instance, cross-ownership of mutual funds by banks, lines of credit to non-banks, or households' deposits across institutions are network effects we want to better understand and integrate.
4. Develop a confidence channel for contagion across economic agents and financial markets and integrate it into the Bank’s system-wide risk simulation toolkit
Perceived confidence channels can amplify contagion to the financial system, generating for instance liquidity hoarding mechanisms among various financial market participants.
5. Explore the development of an agent-based model for system-wide stress-testing leveraging AI agentic tools
The next generation of agent-based model may lend itself to the use of agentic AI to simulate contagion behaviors.
What does the financial stability department of the Bank of Canada do?
The financial stability department monitors developments in the Canadian financial system, conducting analysis and research to assess vulnerabilities and risks for the Canadian financial system and to inform macroprudential policies. The department supports the Bank’s crisis management mandate—including provision of liquidity to financial institutions facing stress—and the Bank’s role as resolution authority for domestic designated financial market infrastructures. Research in the department contributes to the deepening of the understanding of financial stability and financial system issues.
The successful candidate would interact with the Modelling and Analysis of Risks team, a departmental hub composed of PhD researchers dedicated to developing and applying modelling innovations that deepen our understanding of financial stability risks, especially systemic risks.

ECONOMIST / Sr. ECONOMIST
Centre for Effective Governance of Indian States (CEGIS – pronounced See-Jis) aims to improve lives by helping Indian state governments deliver better development outcomes. We believe that well-functioning governments share at least four features with high-performing organisations: (a) outcome measurement and data driven decision making: which requires appropriate data collection (on both inputs and outcomes), analysis, insight generation, and decision making at different levels of government; (b) effective personnel management including – competency-based hiring and training, adequate staffing, appropriate job assignments, and performance measurement and management; (c) strategic public finance where attention is paid to both the quantity and quality of expenditure and revenue, and where resource allocation is based on evidence and cost-effectiveness; (d) and creating efficient systems to leverage markets and external actors (including for-profit and nonprofit organisations). At CEGIS, we support state governments to build these foundations so that they can deliver development outcomes more effectively.
CEGIS works closely with the political and bureaucratic leadership in Indian states to achieve transformational change. We are currently present in 8 states - Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, BTR (Assam), Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha. We also partner with union agencies/ministries such as Capacity Building Commission, Ministry of Women & Child Development (MoWCD), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) to share insights from our state-level work and disseminate them broadly. We also collaborate closely with academics and research institutions to ensure our work is grounded in rigorous research and evidence-based practices.
CEGIS Approach and Model of Functioning
Our solutions to enhance governance are co-created with state governments in a “state-led” way, where we focus on deep partnerships with states with an iterative cycle of “think-demonstrate-document-transfer”. We work closely with the top bureaucratic leadership, front-line workers and public officials in Finance, Planning, Human Resources and a few other priority line departments. Many of our solutions reflect ideas outlined in our founder Prof. Karthik Muralidharan’s book (Accelerating India’s Development), and these solutions are constantly being refined based on real-time feedback and are designed to both be customized to the contexts we are working in, and to create templates that can provide the starting point for replication across contexts.
To further explore the mission of CEGIS and the impact we hope to have, please take a look at this video of our CEO, Dr Vijay Pingale.
