About myself:

I am an Associate Professor of Economics at Panthéon-Sorbonne University, Paris. My research is positioned at the intersection of spatial economics, economic history, and deep learning. Broadly speaking, I am interested in understanding how the movement of people and ideas shapes the spatial distribution of economic activity and the development of urban areas. I am currently looking for a highly motivated pre-doctoral student or research engineer to work with me on existing research projects that employ deep learning models to analyse image or language data at scale. For additional information about my research projects, see my research page.

About the position:

The selected candidate will primarily work on ongoing projects involving the modelling of image data, such as historical maps, documents, and paintings. Responsibilities may evolve based on the projects and the candidate's skills and interests. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to applied research in applied economics and deep learning. It is a research-intensive role, requiring the candidate to work independently and propose innovative solutions to complex problems. Ideally, the candidate should have a strong interest in academic research, as this position provides an excellent pathway to PhD placements at top institutions.

Job description:

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with the research team.
  • Read, assimilate, and summarise relevant and recent scientific literature.
  • Develop and maintain pipelines to automate data sourcing and processing.
  • Implement, optimise, and deploy deep learning models at scale.
  • Evaluate and enhance implementations through rigorous testing and debugging.
  • Eventually, supervise and coordinate undergraduate research assistants.
  • Participate in writing papers and reports.

Ideal candidate:

  • Master's degree in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering or related fields.
  • Prior experience in academic or applied research.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-driven and capable of working independently.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or other object-oriented languages.
  • Expertise in deep learning frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch) and image processing.
  • Ability to write clean, readable, reproducible, and well-documented code.
  • Experience with version control systems (i.e. Git).
  • Good communication skills, fluency in English.

Remuneration:

The remuneration is aligned with the salary scale for Ingénieur d'Etudes (IE) at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).

How to Apply:

Please submit your curriculum vitae and a cover letter to the Econ Job Market applicaiton platform and answer the questions detailing your relevant coursework, research experience, and significant projects. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.
