Job Vacancy

The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) – Member of the Leibniz Association jointly seek qualified candidates to fill a position at the rank of

W1 Assistant Professor (f/m/d) in Finance and Labor

JEL Classification: G

We expect the candidate to have a strong focus on research in financial economics. We are particularly interested in candidates with a research profile linking financial economics and labor. A quantitative research approach, experience with the latest empirical methods, and an expressed willingness to apply economic research to policy questions are desirable.

The professorship serves to deepen the collaboration between the University of Jena and the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH). The IWH is one of the seven economic research institutes of the Leibniz Association in Germany (www.iwh-halle.de). The professorship is associated with the Department of Laws, Regulations, and Factor Markets (LRF) at IWH, which conducts research on the interaction of capital and labor markets, as well as on how laws and regulations affect capital and labor markets. The professorship also contributes to the research areas of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Jena (www.wiwi.uni-jena.de/en).

The requirements are as follows: Applicants will possess a doctorate with a focus on finance or financial economics – or will be awarded one by Fall 2025. The duration of the PhD project and employment together up to the deadline should not exceed six years. The candidate has the potential for successful publications in top-quality journals and, ideally, an existing network of international research collaborations. The candidate is also expected to teach in the Faculty’s Master’s Programs. Knowledge of the German language is not a requirement for the position.

In legal terms, there will be an individual selection process carried out for the position hereby announced. The appointee is assigned the status of a professor (W1) at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena according to section 85 (7) of the Thuringian Higher Education Act. The professorship comes along with an employment at IWH. The employment relationship will initially be limited to three years and may be extended by a further three years, given a positive evaluation. The preferred starting date is October 2025.

Friedrich Schiller University Jena and IWH aim to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and, therefore, strongly encourage suitably qualified female academics to apply. Severely disabled persons will be given preferential consideration in case of equal suitability.

Applications including CV, list of publications, job market paper, documentation of previous teaching experience including evaluation reports, and successfully acquired third-party funding (as a single PDF of < 2MB) as well as two letters of recommendation should be submitted electronically no later than December 1, 2024 to EconJobMarket (https://econjobmarket.org/) or Job Openings for Economists (https://www.aeaweb.org/joe/candidate).

The Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) will be available for interviews at the virtual European and American job markets. For inquiries about the position, you can contact the head of the Laws, Regulations, and Factor Markets department at IWH, Prof. Merih Sevilir, at Merih.Sevilir@iwh-halle.de.
