The Melbourne Institute: Applied Economic & Social Research at the University of Melbourne seeks enthusiastic, motivated economists with research expertise in applied (empirical) economic and social research.

There are between one and six postdoctoral positions available for candidates with expertise in applied microeconomics or applied macroeconomics.

The fields of specialisation cover:  labour economics, the economics of education, the economics of healthcare financing and organisation, public economics, and macroeconomics.  In all cases the successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate strong applied (empirical) econometric skills.

The positions are research-only and classified as Level B Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The positions are for a fixed term only (up to three years) and the successful candidate(s) will be expected to work on research projects as directed by their supervisor.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow positions suit applicants who are about to complete their PhD or have recently completed their PhD. Candidates should possess strong applied econometric skills (especially as applied to the analysis of longitudinal survey data and cross-section and panel administrative data, and/or working on field experiments) with evidence of or the potential to publish in leading general and field-specific economics journals.  Applicants should also have a genuine interest in engaging in policy-relevant research and in disseminating this research to a broad range of audiences.

The Melbourne Institute is an academic department with approximately 40 researchers that is housed in the Faculty of Business and Economics. The Melbourne Institute has an outstanding and dynamic research environment, supported by access to high quality survey and administrative data, and with opportunities to run field experiments and engage in primary data collection. The Melbourne Institute is considered the pre-eminent institute in Australia for applied economics research.  The Institute maintains a collegial and co-operative culture that expects academic excellence as well as the development of policy-relevant research activities that may lead to better policies and practices.

The University of Melbourne is ranked number one in Australia and considered one of the top forty universities in the world. The city of Melbourne is consistently ranked by the Economist as one of the most liveable cities in the world.

The Melbourne Institute offers internationally competitive salaries and benefits and a stimulating work environment.
