The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track.  This position will provide expertise and leadership in research and extension programing with a focus on one or more of the following: agribusiness, production, labor, or regional economics. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent, externally funded, nationally recognized integrated research and extension program.  Additional skills and experience in agricultural finance, optimization methods, econometrics, and agricultural policy are welcome. The position will contribute to the research (35%), extension (35%), and teaching (30%) missions of our department. The successful applicant’s research and extension programs are expected to focus on one or more aspects of the agricultural value chain relevant to Connecticut and elsewhere. The individual filling this position will have the opportunity to work with multidisciplinary teams of research scientists, extension educators, and stakeholders. Scholarship and publication in peer-reviewed journals appropriate to the individual’s areas of expertise are required. Teaching responsibilities will include two courses annually and student advising.

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, one of the leading applied economics departments in the U.S., is ranked by RePEC as 20th world-wide for Agricultural Economics Institutions, and 16th in the U.S. among Agricultural Economics University Departments.  The department has 13 faculty members, 100 undergraduates and 45 graduate students (over 25 Ph.D.’s).  It offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, and is internationally recognized in the areas of Agribusiness & Food Marketing, Environmental & Resource Economics, and Economic Development.  The Department hosts the Zwick Center for Food & Resource Policy (http://zwickcenter.uconn.edu/). We are located on the University’s main campus in Storrs, within driving distance of Boston and New York City.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will have 35% extension, 35% research, and 30% teaching duties with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2020 in a full-time, nine-month tenure-track position. Responsibilities include: develop and implement a strong integrated applied research and extension program; teach two courses at the graduate and/or undergraduate level; collaborate with campus-based faculty, county-based extension faculty and program staff, policymakers, industry leaders, the Zwick Center for Food and Resource Policy, and other partners/clientele; actively seek extramural research funding; and advise undergraduate students and mentor graduate students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Economics, or a related field; excellent oral and written communication skills; advanced training or demonstrable research experience in the economics of agriculture, agribusiness, and/or food, including related areas such as health, the environment, business policy; excellent training in microeconomic theory and empirical methods; and the ability to teach economics and business courses with an emphasis on agriculture and food. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred qualifications include a proven record/potential in securing external grant funding; a record or potential for excellence in research in agribusiness, industrial organization, food or agricultural markets, and/or related public policy issues; a record of significant scholarly output including refereed journals and high-impact extension publications; demonstrated interest and experience in extension or other outreach education programs; demonstrated experience and excellence in teaching;  and proven ability to work in a collegial manner with colleagues and clientele from diverse disciplines and experience.

Salary will be competitive with other public land-grant universities. The anticipated start date for this position is August 23, 2020.
