Job Description: Full-Time Research Assistant/Pre-doc/Interns

Location: Vancouver School of Economics (VSE), University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver

No. of Positions: 3

Deadline for Full Consideration: April 15, 2020*

Deadline for Application Submission: May 15, 2020 (may be extended)

We are looking for three highly skilled and motivated individuals to work as full-time research assistants/interns for a period of one year, which in some cases could be further extended to 2 years with various faculty members affiliated with Centre for Innovative data in Economics Research, VSE, UBC. The appointment would start in May 2020. The job will entail close collaboration with all stages of the research process on a number of new and ongoing empirical projects in the fields of labor, urban, political economy, macro, environment, development, and applied microeconomics.

These positions offer the opportunity to gain exposure to and training in a broad set of economic research topics and approaches including data-intensive methods which will be helpful in pursuing a PhD in economics, finance, and related fields. The chosen candidate will also gain valuable experience analyzing large data sets and working with programs such as Stata, R and GIS; and, for some of the positions, implementing computational models in Matlab, Julia, or Python.

The ideal candidate should: (i) have completed a 4-year undergraduate degree in Economics from a top ranked college or university; (ii) have a strong quantitative background; (iii) have programming experience;(iv) be able to work independently and within team to solve problems; and (v) be planning to pursue a PhD in Economics or a related field.

For one of the three positions, we will encourage applicants interested in moving to economics from an undergraduate degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science and other mathematically intensive fields. Strong open-source software skills are essential for that position.
