The Department of Economics has a vacancy for a PhD and a post doc in Health Economics. The positions are part of the project “Improved decisions with causal inference in health services research”. Both positions are for a period of 3 years, starting in September 2020. The PhD position is an educational position, which will provide a promising research recruit an opportunity of professional development through studies towards a PhD. The postdoc position is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions.

The Department of Economics promotes research at a high international level with a main profile within Public Economics. The department has in total 30 employees, including 13 professors and 3 associate professors. In addition, Centre for Economic Research at NTNU is co-located with the department.

Aim of project

The aim of the project is to establish a national research community that will further develop empirical methods to study health and health care issues. The purpose is to generate knowledge about causal relationships that provide a better basis for political, organizational and clinical decisions. Examples of issues that the research project will consider are:

  • The importance of centralizing the specialist health service
  • Causes and consequences of variations between physicians and health regions in the volume of different types of treatment
  • The importance of socio-economic status and mental health for the need for medical treatment
  • Consequences of school resources and school organization for the mental health of children and adolescents

The project is a collaboration between the Department of Economics and the Department of Social Medicine and Nursing at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and a number of national and international academic research groups. The PhD candidate and the postdoc will be part of an interdisciplinary research group.

Required selection criteria

PhD candidate

The PhD position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 ECTS) with a strong academic background in Economics or Financial Economics or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

Master students in the process of completing their degree are also welcome to apply.

Postdoctoral fellow

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in Economics or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required. Experience from research collaboration is an advantage.

If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognizing that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

Both positions

Basic knowledge about the Norwegian society and econometric methods is an advantage for both positions.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

For both positions, we seek candidates who are industrious, have a passion for research, with the ability to work independently and to contribute to a good working environment.  

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidate

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are remunerated at gross NOK 479 600 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Economics within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

Postdoctoral fellowship

Postdoctoral candidates are placed in code 1352, and are remunerated at gross from NOK 542 400 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The employment period is 3 years.

Both positions

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
