The RFF-CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE) is a research institute co-founded in 2018 by Resources for the Future (RFF) and the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC). The Institute’s mission is to improve environmental, energy, and natural resource decisions through impartial economic research and policy engagement. The Institute is committed to being a central focal point for research insights and policy solutions within Europe, and connecting that work internationally. This is achieved by combining excellence in environmental and energy economics with the climate science and policy competences. EIEE has strong ties with a worldwide network of research institutions engaged in climate economics, energy systems, sustainability transitions, and policy evaluation. EIEE promotes a highly interdisciplinary, international and collaborative research experience.
EIEE is encouraging applications of junior researchers interested in climate economics, digitalization and the environment, behavioural environmental economics, integrated assessment modelling, climate finance, just transition. EIEE project portfolio include grants from the European Research Council (ERC).
Duties will be carried out in Milan (Italy) in the vibrant design district (@ BASE). The selected candidate will interact with researchers of different research background and nationalities. She/he will focus on writing top quality scientific papers, will be engaged in a global network, and will have the chance to attend major conferences.

Climate Economics Integrated Assessment Modelling: The institute maintains a series of IAMs focused on climate economic analysis, and is looking for a researcher focused on model development, including: energy systems modelling, macro-economic modelling, distributional impacts, technological change, uncertainty and decision theory. The ideal candidate holds (or is close to completing) a PhD in economics, or engineering/mathematics/physics/computer science/statistics coupled with an economic background. Proficiency in at least one programming, modelling or statistical language (i.e. R, GAMS, Stata, Python, or Julia) is a requirement. Previous experience in (integrated assessment) modelling, as well as a proven publication track record, will be particularly valued. Excellent command of written and spoken English is essential for this position (ref. MODEL).

Empirical economics and data science: We are seeking strong empirical economists and data scientists to work on the interconnection between disruptive digital technologies and climate change mitigation. The candidate will apply econometric and data analytics techniques to evaluate the economic impacts of digital technologies in three key hard-to-decarbonize sectors: industry, transport and buildings. The ideal candidate for this position has a strong interest in the study of innovation, and particularly digitalization and climate-related technologies; holds (or is close to completing) a PhD in data science, applied statistics, economics, policy analysis, innovation studies, public economics or related areas of research; and shows a good track record in data science and/or applied economics. Previous experience in researching these topics and a proven publication track record, will be particularly valued (ref. DATA).
Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.
Assignments are expected to be in early-mid 2021. The appointment period will be initially of one year, renewable for up to two more years. The gross salary will be based on qualification and working experience and competitive with major research centres in Europe.
