Job description
The position is a regular Assistant or Associate Professor position at the EEF Department. It involves research regarding public health and health policy topics. This includes socioeconomic differences in health, interactions between health and economic outcomes, the study of health systems, the (economic) evaluation of healthcare interventions and the analysis of population data. Research typically takes a life-cycle perspective and aims to contribute to policy at the regional, national and global level.
UMCG and FEB have long-term collaborations in research on health, economics and business. The vacancy reflects this joint commitment and research agenda. Currently, health systems around the world need to adjust to epidemiological and demographic transitions. A defining feature of the future health landscape is that a significant share of the burden of disease may be prevented through interventions in lifestyles and the living environment. This puts socioeconomic differences and societal inequality at the forefront. Accordingly, there is an increasing need for the study of interactions between health and economic outcomes, the study of health systems, the (economic) evaluation of healthcare interventions and the analysis of population data. We aim to appoint an academic who has been successfully active in such areas for some years and who can develop into a senior academic with an impact on science and society. Communication and interaction with local, regional and national health policy makers and societal outlets is a key part of this.
The position also involves coordinating activities for the FEB research theme “healthy society” as embedded in the Center for Public Health in Economics and Business (CPHEB). The position entails membership of the CPHEB board. This includes supervision of seminar series and fund-raising efforts.
The position involves teaching in public health, health policy and health economics topics. This includes bachelor, master, executive and summer school courses as well as supervision of bachelor, master and research master students. Research and teaching will be carried out in close collaboration with Professor Van den Berg and Professor Mierau.
Qualifications
• a PhD in (health) economics, econometrics or a related field (demography, epidemiology, public health etc.)
• interest in health economics as evidenced by publications in leading international journals
• organisational qualities and excellent communication skills
• excellent teaching abilities both at the undergraduate and graduate level
• ample experience in supervising and mentoring researchers (including PhD students)
• wide, relevant national and international network
• demonstrable management qualities
• proven ability to acquire external funding
• proven ability of interaction with policy and practice.
Organisation

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) is one of its largest Faculties. The Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance (EEF), embedded in FEB, is an active and international research community, performing at the highest international level in terms of research and publications. The Department offers bachelor and master courses in Health and Economics and Business in bachelor, master and executive programmes.
“Heathly ageing for healthy society” is one of four designated focal research areas at the University. Accordingly, FEB supports and invests in a team of first-rate researchers working on these issues. The health research infrastructure includes the renowned University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the interdisciplinary Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health (AJSPH) which is the flagship of the focus on health issues at the University and the UMCG. Research and policy communication and advice are strongly integrated across these institutions. At FEB, researchers in the focal research area collaborate in the Center for Public Health in Economics and Business (CPHEB), which serves as the Faculty arm of the AJSPH.
Conditions of employment
We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, a full-time tenure track assistant professor or associate professor position with:
· a salary depending on qualifications and work experience and ranges from a minimum of € 3,746 gross per month (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 6,317 gross per month (salary scale 13)
· 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus and participation in a pension scheme
· The position is permanent on the condition of a positive evaluation after two years. It is a fulltime position with a percentage of research time for at least 40% and depends on publication output.
