Instawork, a digital marketplace for flexible staffing, is seeking a Chief Economist with a proven track record of success. Reporting to the Director of Business Operations, this role leverages data science to analyze our labor network, identify new labor trends, create new industry reports, and provide commentary about the labor market and emerging trends facing employers and the hourly workforce. This is a results-driven position that requires knowledge and experience in leveraging data to help tell our story and inform the public.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop the strategic research roadmap and agenda in conjunction with our Strategic Communications team.
  • Conduct your own research on hiring, compensation, shift trends, geography, industry insights, and other topics related to Instawork
  • Publicize your work in industry reports as well as broadcast, print, and social media, working closely with the Head of Strategic Communications
  • Act as the public-facing spokesperson for Instawork and our data to media, policymakers, business leaders and other external audiences.
  • Provide regular commentary on the hourly workforce, including unemployment reports, industry-specific studies, and other high-profile data releases.
  • Serve as our main liaison with other organizations and government agencies to evaluate and pursue mutually beneficial collaborations on data and research.
  • Lead research projects with some combination of data science analysis, data exploration, data visualization, and insightful and clear writing.
  • Deliver thoughtful presentations on research findings and emerging trends, strategically elevating Instawork and becoming an insightful thought leader.

Qualifications:

  • A graduate degree (Ph.D. preferred) in economics, public policy, or other highly quantitative field.
  • Proven track record with statistical and economic analysis. Experience in Labor Economics is preferred, but not required
  • Experience with Python, R or similar coding language required (e.g., Stata)
  • Experience with data access and manipulation tools such as SQL
  • Proven record of clear and effective public speaking, including on-camera media interviews
  • Experience developing and executing long-term research plans and roadmaps
  • Must be an exceptional writer who can turn complex topics into easy-to-understand pieces of content, including industry reports and public-policy style reports
  • Experience working with journalists, trade groups, think tanks, regulatory and legislative bodies is a plus
  • Must be comfortable in the limelight, this is a high-profile position
  • Natural self starter, who can focus and execute, with an eye for details
  • Effective collaborator who will work cross functionally across teams and geographies
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to execute while managing multiple projects at the same time
