The Opportunity

The Australian Electricity Market Initiative (AEMI) is an initiative recently introduced by the Monash Business School to spur academic research, policy formulation and industry engagement in the electricity sector in Australia. Its goal is "to become the pre-eminent centre for all matters related to electricity markets." AEMI benefits from the active support of the Dean of the School, and readily has access to the main market regulators. Areas of research that AEMI focuses on are: wholesale market design, nodal pricing, storage integration in the national grid, the industrial organization of the electricity market, the valuation of new services, new securities for electricity markets and network pricing and regulation.

AEMI runs an active visitor program and a series of conferences -- with the inaugural event in May 2019. Members of AEMI include some Monash University faculty as well as high-profile researchers such as Frank Wolak (Stanford Economics) and Steve Callander (Stanford GSB) or Jacob Goeree (University of NSW).

We are looking for two outstanding candidates to assist us in delivering a two-year project on the economics of electricity storage. We specifically seek one candidate to work on market design (including stochastic games and numerics) and one candidate to work on industrial organization and competition policy. The market designer will work, among others, with Professor Jacob Goeree.

We offer a competitive compensation, a stimulating working environment in top-ranked institutions in Australia, an attractive location, a discretionary research budget and time for post-doctoral researchers to conduct their own research. Post-doctoral researchers should expect to work approximately 2/3 of their time on directed tasks, and devote the remainder to their own research agenda.

The candidates:

Candidates must possess a PhD in economics, operation research or applied mathematics, or be close to completion at the time of applying. They must be active researchers in either market design or stochastic games, or industrial organisation. The work on market design requires both theory and numerical implementation. The work on IO is largely theoretical; there is no data on storage.

Ideally candidates should hold some institutional knowledge of electricity markets but that is secondary. Ideally the candidates' research agenda aligns with that AEMI to make best use of the resources available.

Expected start date: February to July 2022. Covid-related delays can be accommodated

Level A: compensation approx. AUD 92,000+17% retirement benefits (superannuation)

Duration: 2 years, with discretionary option to renew for 1 year

Location: Sydney for market design, Melbourne for IO
