Professors Sara Moreira and Nicolas Crouzet are hiring an Empirical Research Fellow for a period of one to two years.

The research fellow's work will involve close collaboration on a series of new and ongoing projects covering topics of Macroeconomics, Firm Dynamics, and Corporate Finance. The work will include quantitative and qualitative research and analysis involving the coordination and management of data. For more information on the types of research projects you would be working on, please visit websites for Prof. Moreira and Prof. Crouzet. This position provides an opportunity to gain experience in academic economics research and would be ideal preparation for a Ph.D. program in economics or finance.

The ideal candidate should be completing (or have completed) a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree by summer 2023, and have some interest in pursuing a PhD in economics or finance. Work experience is not required. Candidates must have proven ability to code in at least one of the following languages: Stata, R, SAS, Python, or SQL. Expertise on Stata and Latex is a major plus. In addition, they must pass a Federal background investigation to secure Special Sworn Status SSS with the US Census Bureau (this requires having lived in the U.S. for at least 36 months out of the last 5 years). Access to the data underlying both projects would primarily be through the Census Research Data Center at the Chicago Fed, though the research assistant may occasionally work from the Kellogg Global Hub as well.

The position provides excellent preparation for entry into Ph.D. programs. Previous holders of this and similar positions at Kellogg have gone on to Ph.D. programs at UC Berkeley, University of Chicago, Harvard, MIT, Northwestern, Princeton, and Stanford.

The application consists of two parts:

  1. Fill out the survey linked to this position posting (requires detail for you relevant education and experience for this position).
  2. After submitting the survey, you must also submit a formal application here, including a cover letter, current CV, university transcripts, and two professional references.
The cover letter should briefly describe your career or academic goals, your experience as a research assistant, or other experience with economic research (e.g., senior thesis), and a description of your programming background. Unofficial transcripts for undergraduate and graduate studies (if applicable) are sufficient.
Your application cannot be considered without this second step.
