The purpose of this job is to identify and measure the effects of global changes in agricultural context and the impact of adaptation policies, particularly in Africa. More specifically, you will have to: (i) empirically measure the impacts of global changes and identifiable adaptation strategies, particularly in Africa; (ii) use these results in foresight exercise; (iii) measure the effectiveness, limits and conditions required for the adaptation strategies observed (including risks of maladaptation); and (iv) ultimately propose private adaptation strategies or public policies that are effective both at present and in the future.

The scientific issues involved in your job will cover assessing the different channels through which global changes are likely to affect farming households; understanding and assessing the interactions between the different components of global change; assessing adaptation strategies, their effectiveness and the risks of maladaptation, the related costs and benefits, and the barriers to their implementation, in a context of continuous change and uncertainty about the impacts of the global changes. You will also have to take account of the limited availability of data, if necessary by using surveys and field experiments which may be cross-checked with heterogeneous data, in particular satellite data.

You will develop approaches based primarily on empirical methods adapted to tests on causal relations, in particular econometrics applied to the impact evaluation (quasi-experimental econometrics in particular), panel econometrics and statistics, but also experimental economics in contexts where data may be limited (randomised controlled trials and lab in the field) and probability elicitation of expert knowledge.

You will also closely follow microeconomic modelling of impacts and adaptations to global changes to support your empirical analyses. You will thus be able to establish relationships with teams involved in the qualitative assessment of the impact of initiatives to support climate change adaptation (research and development programmes, public action, etc.).

Location accuracy:

You will be assigned to Nogent sur Marne to receive training on climate change adaptation issues with assignments in Montpellier. A transfer to Montpellier is expected within 2 years.

Desired profiled

PhD in economics with demonstrated skills in econometrics, if possible in impact assessment.

Ability to develop experimental and quasi-experimental economics protocols would be an advantage.

You should also have a good understanding of development issues. Finally, you should have the ability to interact with other disciplines (agricultural science, climatology, ecology and geography in particular) and enjoy working in a team

Excellent command of French and English is required.
