The National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), a stand-alone national graduate university, aims to cultivate public policy leaders who will play key roles in democratic governance. We are international in our outlook, with around 20% of our faculty members non-Japanese and 66% of students from abroad, most of whom are mid-career public administrators. We are seeking candidates at any level for a position to start in Fall 2024 (exact timing negotiable). Candidates should have or firmly expect a Ph.D. in Economics or equivalent by August 2024 and should show a record or promise of publications in high-quality academic journals. Appointments at the junior level will be tenure-track.

We are primarily looking to hire in development economics but will also consider other applied micro fields such as labor, public, environmental, and behavioral economics. Candidates must be willing to teach an empirical development economics course and be able to supervise MA and Ph.D. theses using microeconometric methods.

The appointee will be required to teach 3 courses per year, in English, and supervise master's and Ph.D. students. An appointee is also expected to conduct high-level research, contribute administratively, and compete for external funds.

Application Instructions:

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until February 29, 2024, or until the position is filled. All applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and samples of current research papers. Candidates should request that two letters of reference be submitted on their behalf. All materials should be sent electronically to the GRIPS Economics Search Committee via EconJobMarket.
